RTW: Best Supporting Character

Road Trip Wednesday is a 'Blog Carnival' where YA Highway's contributors post a weekly writing- or reading-related question that begs to be answered. In the comments, you can hop from destination to destination and get everybody's unique take on the topic.

This week's topic:
What supporting character from a YA book would you most like to see star in their own novel?

Without a doubt, I'd love to read a book dedicated entirely to Four from Divergent. He was a complex character with an interesting, though sad, backstory. I would really like to see from his perspective his testing process, his faction choosing ceremony, and his initial days in the Dauntless faction. I also find myself wondering about the love interest's thought process and how they sort through their feelings for the MC in almost every book I read that doesn't provide this information (the kind that switch perspectives). The same goes for Four: I want to see him work through how he feels about Tris.

The part in the story where Tris examines her feelings for Four pretty much sums up for me why a book about him would be fantastic:
“Who is he when he isn't Dauntless, isn't an instructor, isn't Four, isn't anything in particular?

Whoever he is, I like him. It's easier to admit that to myself now, in the dark, after all that just happened. He is not sweet or gentle or particularly kind. But he is smart and brave, and even though he saved me, he treated me like I was strong. That is all I need to know.”

As a side note (but still related to seeing the story from the love interest's perspective), did anybody else read the segment of Midnight Sun on Stephenie Meyer's website and think that it was loads better than Twilight? I am one of the legion of people who never quite understood why Edward and Jacob were so smitten with Bella. I felt like Midnight Sun actually filled in some of those gaps, sort of actually gave the black hole that was Bella's character a little substance.

  1. I haven't read Midnight Sun but heard a lot about it. And Four was one of me and Pam's choices, too!

  2. I haven't read Divergent, but I DID read the partial of Midnight Sun. It was definitely better than Twilight. Boy perspectives melt me, and I wish that she would just stop being all high-horsey and finish that one.

  3. Marquita: I didn't even have to think long after reading the prompt, Four is just that interesting to me. :)

Crystal: I totally agree about the high-horsey thing. Get over it already and give your extremely loyal fans what they want. I too love boy perspectives in these books :)

  5. Yes, Four is an international man of mystery around the Highway today...very cool!

(Also, Canada FTW! I went to school there, married one, and brought him home - we still get up to Montreal a lot!)

  6. So I've been waiting until I'm 100 percent finished with my current revisions to read Divergent (because I've been DYING to read it for forever) so this RTW is killing me! Everyone seems to think Four should get his own book. :0

  7. Yes, Four is my favourite book guy at the moment and I'm not ashamed to say it. Peeta is pretty much neck and neck with him, though.

  8. Yes and YES to both choices. I think a book from Edward's PoV and a whole one from Jacob's could have been loads better than what we were given *cough Breaking Dawn cough*. Great choices!
