Celebrating Debut Authors

I'm sure many of you have heard of the Debut Author Challenge, but for those of you who haven't, here's what it's all about:

"It helps debut authors out with exposure, but it also helps readers find debut books that they might have otherwise missed." (from the Hobbitsies blog)

Tara over at Hobbitsies is hosting the challenge this year, and over 300 participants have signed up already. For more details about the challenge go HERE. I'm anticipating some great debuts ahead in 2013!

A minimum of twelve debut books must be read for the challenge, but I'm hoping I can top that. I've compiled a list of books by debut authors that have piqued my interest. I hope to read at least one a month, but more would be great:

Even if you aren't able to take part in the challenge, it's always nice to throw support behind authors breaking onto the scene. On the Hobbitisies site, you can save or print off a spreadsheet of all MG and YA debuts in 2013 (find it HERE under the 'debut lists' heading). This is a pretty cool resource if you want to know what's new this year (aside from the glut of middle books and series finales due out this year). Give it some thought and maybe join in!

  1. What a great idea! I'm definitely going to have to check out a bunch of these when they're released. Oh, and I'm not even going to ask how long it took you to compile this list. :)

    1. 2013 is looking pretty good for debut authors. I'm really excited about reading as many of these as I can. It didn't take overly long to make the list thanks to Goodreads 2013 debut lists. :)

  2. I love this. I think I might have to do it, too. I always feel like I'm catching up on books from the year before, so this will be a fun way to read more 2013 releases! Thanks :)

    1. I think it will be a lot of fun. I'm always playing catch-up with older releases too, so you're not alone! :)

  3. Yay! Thanks for picking CANARY! I can't wait for you to read it (and the good news is, it comes out on August 1 now instead of the 28th!). Happy reading! : )

  5. I signed up for the challenge last night, Jaime! I don't think I'll have much trouble reading 12 debuts this year... There are SO MANY that have grabbed my attention, and many of those are on your list as well. Have you heard of RED by Alison Cherry? It's another 2013 debut that looks fantastic!

    1. Yay! I wasn't sure who exactly was taking part, so I'm glad you're joining in. I read 79 books in 2012, so I think that tackling a bunch of debuts this year shouldn't be a problem. Plus, if we end up doing the superlatives blogfest again in December I'll have lots to work with! :) I did hear about RED. Not sure how I missed that one. Thanks!

  7. Yay! Thanks so much for this post. I'm so glad someone is hosting this as I went to Story Siren's blog and saw nothing for this year. It will be my fourth year to do it. I enjoy having a reason to read and support debut authors.

    1. I figured since I read almost 80 books in 2012, I can make a good chunk of the books I read this year debuts. There are some good ones coming out! :)

  9. Yes to so many of these! I need to sign up now. :)

  10. I am going to unofficially challenge myself to read more debuts in 2013! Thanks for this list--I feel like I should print it out and take it to the bookstore with me.

    1. A few of the series I read are wrapping up this year too, so it will be good to slot others in to take their place. There's a really good list in pdf form on the Hobbitsies blog with all of the MG and YA debuts coming out this year. :)

  11. I've got a lot of the same ones on my list - Parallel is close to the top of my "highly anticipated"!

    1. That one sounds really good! I'm going to have to prioritize some of them, but PARALLEL will be close to the top. :)

    1. I think January still counts. It's still helping out debut authors no matter when you read it, right? :)

  13. I didn't realize The Madman's Daughter wasn't out yet--I've seen that reviewed a lot in the past few months. I'll check out the other blog. :)

  14. So I came over here all ready to explain why I didn't think I would sign up for this, and then I went through the list. I cut it down to titles that I had heard buzz about, authors whose blogs I follow, and genres I love (so much historical!) and wound up with close to fifty titles that interested me. So really, the odds of me reading twelve of them this year are pretty good, right? I have never been more susceptible to peer pressure than I am when I read YA blogs!!!

    1. It was just way to tempting to pass up. I figure that I'll probably want to read them anyway, so why not take part in the challenge? Plus, twelve books is really not all that many. One per month and that's it. :)
