Currently...

{I'm borrowing this "Currently..." idea from Katy Upperman, who got it from Kate Hart, who got it from somewhere else.}

I've become a slacker blogger of the worst variety over the past couple of months, mainly due to a lack of inspiration. I'm struggling with that whole "What can I say that hasn't been said a hundred times already?" thing. So I figure now is as good a time as any to do a Currently... post just to check in and say hello. (Hello! ☺)

Loving

Instagram!* I'm taking part in the #FMSPhotoADay March Challenge, and it's been totally fun. The corny St. Patrick's Day socks and green Chucks combo was for the topic 'green' on March 17th. These socks were the one bit of faux-Irish paraphernalia that this Irish Canadian wore for the Pipe & Drum band pub crawl I went on. (Also loving: Becoming a part of this fun bunch of people in the Royal Canadian Legion Pipe & Drum band.)

Reading

Requiem by Lauren Oliver
I have a handful of series that I still need to finish reading. The final books in all of these series are currently sitting on my shelves, so it's high time I got to them. Requiem is one such book, and I'm curious to see how Oliver wraps everything up.

Watching

For some time now, I've been listening to people rave about this show. Heck, even one of the baristas at Starbucks was fangirling over it. So I decided to check it out. I have to say, it's really interesting and I'm 100% engaged every episode.

Thinking About Stressing Over

Hmm. Where to start?
  1. Querying - There's nothing quite like sending your little idea off into the world and hoping someone bites.
  2. Current WIP - I know what I want from this story, but moving it from my head to the page is challenging.
  3. Drumming - I'm trying to keep up with a super talented teen in my drum lessons, which is keeping me on my toes. But for some reason, I can't seem to get my hands to master an accented seven stroke roll. It's driving me slowly bonkers.

Wishing...

Mother Nature would give us a freaking break already. We have had snow on the
ground since mid-October. I think it's time Spring made an arrival. Like, yesterday.

Making Me Happy

An arrangement that my writer friend and CP Jess Silverstein proposed. Authors Bruce Coville and Paula Danziger used to swap 300 (new) words a day just to keep each other accountable with the whole Butt-In-Chair-Hands-On-Keyboard thing. So Jess and I have started doing something similar. This writing is rough and off the cuff (though, her "rough" words are so good), so there isn't any critiquing going on yet. It's just a "Hey, I wrote this today and I'm proving it to you" kind of deal. We're allowed one day off a week and one sick day a month. It's challenging, but it's exactly what I needed to get my butt in the chair. So far so good, and I can finally see the end of this first draft approaching. Productivity makes me very, very happy.

So what have you been up to lately?

  1. Game of Thrones! Cannot wait!!!

I'm reading REQUIEM now too. I was skeptical of Hana as a narrator at first, but I'm finding her chapters fascinating. I'm dreading the end of the book, though, because of Lena doesn't end up with who I want her to end up with, I might have to throw it across the room. ;-)

    1. Season 2 of Game of Thrones feels like ages ago. I might have to watch it again just to buff up.

I've just barely started reading REQUIEM, and just got to a very tense scene between Lena and a certain fellow. (I'm trying to avoid spoilers.) Yikes! Must keep reading. At this point, I'm not sure who I want her to end up with. I expect that will change fairly quickly. :)

    2. Well, Katy, you already know my thoughts on the love triangle ;)

I ended up loving Requiem. And Hana's chapters made me super sad :(

  2. I LOVE the idea of swapping each day to keep productivity up - what a great idea! I want to copy :)

And SCANDAL is so so good. I love it. Kerry W is ace. (And 1st Network show with black female lead since 70s I read).

    1. Swapping words has been super challenging, but it means I definitely write very single day even if it is only 300. I needed that kind of accountability.

SCANDAL is really good! Sometimes I have a hard time seeing what people are so gung-ho over when it comes to TV--DEXTER, HOMELAND, GREY'S ANATOMY...--but this one sucked me in right away. And so many episodes end in cliffhangers! Love it. :)

  3. I love the arrangement you have with your CP! That's really great.

I love SCANDAL. It's become one of my favorite shows.

And I've loved following your Instagram photos!

    1. I'm glad that Jess mentioned the word swap because I really needed the accountability. It's challenging but well worth it. As for SCANDAL, it's quickly become one of those shows that I can sit and watch back to back to back episodes and not grow bored. It's that good! :)

  4. Hello! I can't wait for Game of Thrones and thank you, I didn't know when Awkward came back on until I saw your post :)

    1. It's been far too long since Season 2 of both shows, so I'm really getting antsy! I'm hoping that Spring shows up with both of them. That would be epic. :)

  5. Love the green shoes! I'm obsessing over moving and particularly how moving has eaten up all of my writing time. Dislike. And like you, I'm wishing that spring would start tomorrow (I mean, technically it will, but it doesn't feel like it).

    1. The funny thing about the shoes is that I bought them when I was working at Starbucks. Despite the fact that they totally matched my apron, they weren't dress code so I couldn't wear them. Probably best because they would have ended up reeking like stale coffee and getting wrecked.

I know how much moving sucks, so I know where you're coming from. There's nothing quite like settling into a new home and having no more boxes around staring you in the face. I hope your move goes smoothly! :)

  6. I am also counting down the days until Game of Thrones! Although, we have to wait an extra day over here in the UK.

Only the first season of Scandal has been aired - it took a while to get going but I am looking forward to season two. Kerry Washington is brilliant!

    1. Less than two weeks left 'til Game of Thrones! Can't wait. :) Though, I am a little terrified because I know how much George R. Martin likes to kill people off (despite the fact that I haven't yet read the books). I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a select few.

I'm partway through the second season of Scandal and really enjoying it. There are things that I don't love (Huck's kind of creepy), but for the most part I could watch it for hours. :)

  7. Oh, Game of Thrones! And don't forget Falling Skies!
Ugh, I'm done with this damned winter too!
    Yay for productivity! =)

    1. I am a whole season behind in Falling Skies. :/ I kept meaning to get caught up on it, but then other shows started and it got lost in the shuffle. Should probably sit down and watch it already.

I'm looking out my window and it's supposedly the first day of Spring, but I call BS. It looks like January. Here's hoping Spring arrives for both of us soon! :)

  8. Those lilacs are making me want to burst into tears, because spring is nowhere in sight right now, and it'll be a long while until mine start to bloom. The snow in our front yard is piled taller than me. Blah. Can't wait for Awkward to start up again! And I keep forgetting that REQUIEM is out, and I still need to pick up a copy. Love your Irish sockies, by the way. :)

    1. Ugh. I know. First day of Spring? I think someone got the date wrong. (Spoiler alert: it's Mother Nature and she hates us.) For now I'll just have to content myself with watching AWKWARD and reading good books that take me away from this buried in snow existence.

I had to go on a hunt for those Irish socks (around here). I knew I had a pair, but I didn't know where they went to. They're my one piece of tacky-ish St. Patrick's Day paraphernalia. As Jess would say: I'm too Irish for this malarkey. ;)

  9. I REALLY love the lilacs too.... They look just like the ones that grow at my parents' house so now I am wishing for home AND spring... <3 Love the song, and that CP daily swap idea! That sounds like a good one... Aaaand my "Stressing over" category would also be a list. -_-

I'll have to remember the "Currently..." post for a rainy day of blogging sometime. :)

    1. One of my favourite places in the world (Mackinac Island, MI) has a lilac festival every year and the whole island smells like lilacs (and horse manure because there are horse drawn carriages all over the place). What I wouldn't give for the smell of lilacs and a lot less snow. :/

I could have added a pile more things to my Stressing Over list, but nobody wants to read a blog post that long. ;)

  10. REQUIEM is next on my reading list and I can't wait to read it! Also anticipating spring break. And warmer weather (no break for NC folk either). Also, thanks for the heads up about Awkward. I was wondering. :)

Also, I LOVE the idea of swapping words every day. May have to do this...

Good luck with querying (FINGERS CROSSED!!!) and the drumming. Have a great week!

    1. I just need to sit down with REQUIEM and dig right in. I've been picking it up and reading only little bits here and there, and that's no way to read a book. I'm hoping this weekend will be full of reading, since there appears to be no warm weather on the horizon. Bleh.

Swapping words with Jess has been so, so helpful. 300 words a day is actually pretty manageable. They may not all be awesome words, but often times it gets the creative juices flowing and I keep on writing. It's working really well! :)

  11. Great post, Jaime! The lilac, oh dear God, the lilac. Last year at this time we had 80 degree weather, the snow was gone, Birdy wore this cute little bowling shirt and capri jeans to her birthday party. Today - 4 degrees at the bus stop (before factoring in the wind chill). Make it stop, please. :)

I am currently reading JUST ONE DAY and then next is REQUIEM. It's all based on due date from the library. :)

Good luck with your 300-word Daily Swap with Jess - sounds like a brilliant idea! And best of luck with your queries - you have put yourself out there and that's such a big step! Well done!

    Have a wonderful day

    1. It makes me feel so much better to know that many of my friends south of the border are still stuck in the same crappy weather that we are. Not that I'd wish that on anyone, but it's nice to know we aren't the only ones. I keep hoping I'll wake up one day and Spring will finally be here. She teased us for a bit (she's like that sometimes), but then Winter shoved her out of the way again.

The 300-word Daily Swap has worked wonders for getting my butt in the chair. It's exactly what I need to make sure that I'm slowly but surely plugging away at this WIP. It often leads to more words, so that's awesome! :)

  13. I'm so excited for both GoT and Awkward--Mike watched GoT when it aired (and I think he's current on the books) but I just got into it this winter and we watched the end of S2 a few days ago. But I didn't realize Awkward would be back so soon! That will be a lot of fun. (And Doctor Who starts up again soon, as well!)

As for weather, though--we had gorgeous, 60-and-sunny weather the weekend before last, then the temperature steadily fell until this week when it's been in the 30s, windy, and snowing. At least today the sun was out--I can bundle up in my big coat for the cold, but I can't do anything about the *gray*.

Ok...I'm definitely checking blogs right now to put off writing, so I guess I should go pound out some words, huh? :-p

  14. I'm a total slacker blogger, too. I just looked at my blog and all but one of the posts on the main page is a review! Eeek. I need a real post STAT!

Yay for the return of Awkward! I can't wait!
