What's Up Wednesday

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly meme geared toward readers and writers, allowing us to touch base with blog friends and let them know what's up. Should you wish to join us, you will find the link widget at the bottom of this post. We really hope you will take part!

WHAT I'M READING
I've made significant progress on both North and South and A Fine Balance, and I'm thoroughly enjoying both (though the latter is not without its awful parts). I've promised myself that I'll watch the BBC North & South miniseries (for the millionth time) once I'm done the book. I'm also finishing up Lauren Miller's Parallel, which I would describe as a fun contemporary with a bit of a sci-fi twist.

WHAT I'M WRITING
I'm closing in on the 25K mark on my WIP. This is both exhilarating and a bit scary because once again wordiness has taken over, and there's an awful lot that still needs to happen. Revisions are going to be a blast, I tell ya. I was mostly successful at meeting my goals this week, with only one real hiccup. Here's my plan for this week. (Also: How on earth is it already the end of July?!):

          Wednesday, July 24th
          •  spend one hour on writing - DONE (Spent 2 hours writing and wrote 1028 words)

          Thursday, July 25th
          •  500 + new words on WIP and/or work on R+R - DONE (Sort of... I cheated on these WIPs by revising a third WIP. O_o)

          Friday, July 26th
          •  500+ new words on WIP and/or work on R+R - 1/2 DONE (Will write more on Sunday.)

          Saturday, July 27th & Sunday, July 28th
DAYS OFF - Other 1/2 DONE (Between Friday and Sunday, I wrote 1200 words.)

          Monday, July 29th
          •  500+ new words on WIP and/or work on R+R - DONE (1350 words)

          Tuesday, July 30th
          •  250+ new words on WIP and/or work on R+R - Revised and had a breakthrough. FINALLY!

***As always, I'll be tracking my progress each day right here on this checklist. But unlike always, this week I'll be allowing myself to substitute legitimate planning days for any of the daily goals listed above. I feel like it's high time some planning takes place.***

WHAT INSPIRES ME RIGHT NOW
The birth of a new prince (see below) and the consequent excitement and celebration; good books that keep me reading for hours; long talks with my sister that involve hilarity and lots of brainstorming for our WIPs; and the friendliness of neighbours I've never actually met following the storm that resulted in a tree landing on Hubby's work truck.

WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO
Baby Boy Cambridge, the Little Prince. ©
Drinking Fortnum & Mason Royal Blend tea, awaiting then celebrating the birth and presentation of Baby Cambridge. (Yes, I'm thrilled about this because Canada is part of the Commonwealth and this baby is our future king too.) I have to say I was disappointed by all of the tweets slamming on the #RoyalBaby watch. To those people I would say: There's nothing wrong with being excited about a historical moment like the birth of a new prince, the future sovereign of more than 50 countries? Not to mention there's so much awfulness in the world, isn't it just nice to celebrate some good news once in a while? Why not take some time to geek out over the things you love and be happy that others can geek out over the things they  love too. [End rant.]

In other news...

Thanks to Netflix, I've been marathoning New Girl, which is pretty much like crack. Only really, really funny. (Crack isn't funny.) I thought I'd despise Schmidt, but he's easily the funniest character on the show. Plus, I'm a total Jess + Nick shipper. (Who in their right mind isn't?!) Who's that girl? It's Jess. And she's awesomely quirky.

And now for a big (albeit non-royal) announcement: the winner of our Ready. Set. WRITE! Writer's Care Package Giveaway!

  1. Aw! I love babies, and princes are worth celebrating even if other people try to knock it down. Jealousy?
Congrats on that 25,000 word point! That's fantastic. I wouldn't worry about the wordiness. That's why revisions are there. What would we do without revisions???

    1. Babies are wonderful, as are especially cute baby princes. I think what excites me about it all is that their story feels like a fairy tale, and I kind of still believe in fairy tales, you know? As for my word count, I actually get a bit of a thrill from deleting words in revisions, so I'm not too stressed about it at this point. :)

  2. Yay for baby Cambridge! It was all a bit crazy, but I love a big event that pulls everyone together and the Royals are so good at that. I can't wait to hear his name! Also loved that Niagara Falls went blue :)

Good Luck with your writing this week it must feel great to be at 25,000 words!

    1. Also I have never seen North & South I think I need to fix that :)

    2. I agree: I love events like this that pull people together. And how can you not love Will & Kate? They're adorable and I think they've done a lot to try and endear themselves to the public. Love them for that! I think there were all kinds of "blue celebrations" around our country, including the Peace Tower at Parliament Hill in Ottawa, which they turned blue for the occasion. :)

And as for North & South, you definitely need to see it! Richard Armitage as John Thornton is seriously swoonworthy!

  3. I was telling Alexa that someone at my work thought Spencer would be a good name, another way to remember Diana. While I didn't watch, I did follow the news and was quite excited :D (even being French :P)

Congrats on 25k and no worries about wordiness at this stage! We can always help you fix it after :D Cut cut cut during revisions :D And I think I need to watch NEW GIRL...

    Happy Wednesday, Jaime <3

    1. There have been some people suggesting Spencer as a middle name. He'll have to have a more traditional name like George or James because he's third in line for the throne. It was all very exciting!

As for the wordiness, I kind of think it's a rush to hit that delete key during revisions, so I'm not too worried at this point. I had plenty of practice on Watch of Night. ;-)

  4. Um hello, that NEW GIRL gif just totally convinced me to start watching it. Wow. Maybe whenever Trev and I finally make our way through the rest of HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER that can be our new funny show. Also, that pic of the new prince is adorable. It makes me sad that people were bashing excitement over the birth of a baby. A baby, for goodness sake! I agree with you that it's very good news and something to celebrate. Good luck with your writing goals this week! We'll have to touch base again soon about story stuff. :)

    1. Not gonna lie, I rewound that particular kiss a few times just to enjoy it over and over again. At first I didn't think Nick was anything to write home about, but now...whoa baby! :P I think you'd like NEW GIRL. It's weird and quirky, but it has made me laugh out loud on more than one occasion. Isn't Baby Cambridge a total cutie? So adorable. :-) I think so many people are excited about this because Will & Kate's story feels like a fairy tale and people still want to believe in fairy tales. Plus, as a couple, they are completely charming and likeable. To the groaners and haters: Get over yourselves.

And we'll definitely have to touch base over story stuff again this week! :)

  5. Wow, so much love for NEW GIRL everywhere. I haven't seen it yet, but hopefully one of these days.

Congrats on all your writing progress! I tend to write shorter first drafts and then have to add a lot in revisions, but in either case, that's what revisions are for. It's been so cool to see word counts go up as Read. Set. WRITE! continues.

    Have a great week!

    1. It's such a funny little show, and Zooey Deschanel is just quirky. Love it! And that kiss...yowza!

I'm the exact opposite when it comes to first drafts--I end up with an unwieldy beast of a story that is in desperate need of a shave. Thankfully, I kind of love deleting words in the revision process, so this should be tons of fun! ;-)

      Have a great week!

  6. So, based on that clip I think I need to watch NEW GIRL. WOW

Also, so sorry about your hubby's truck! But neighbors emerging everywhere (we have the same thing when a hurricane hits and there's a lot of clean-up) leaves me a little more hopeful for humanity. Which is also why I'm all about celebrating GOOD events. Like Baby Cambridge.

And congrats on the productivity! Good luck this week!

    1. I confess, I rewound that particular scene in NEW GIRL and watched it a few times back to back. So hot! And there were more to follow. ;-)

Hubby's truck was surprisingly not damaged too, too much, so that's a plus. And the neighbours I met were so nice, it almost makes the truck debacle worth it. I'm totally into celebrating good events too. Like I've said to others, their story feels like a modern day fairy tale, and I think we all still want to believe in fairy tales. Plus, those two are so charming and likeable. So, yay for Baby Cambridge! :D

  7. Man, they are making us WAIT on that name! But they're such a cute family. I love Kate's expression in those pictures--beaming new mama who is totally still getting used to having adoring crowds everywhere she goes. I really admire how sweet and gracious she always seems to be. She's gotta be tired, but she's still waving and smiling.

Sorry to hear about the truck! Yikes! I hope everyone there is ok.

Good luck with the revisions--you'll get there. And you've got help :)

    1. Oh, I know! It's madness, I tell you. Madness. I'm rooting for James, personally. They are definitely a cute family. I loved seeing William cuddle his new baby and then carry it out in the car seat. It all felt so normal despite the camera flashes and cheering onlookers. Given what William lost, I think that baby will be loved and cared for so much, and he'll be as active in the baby's life as possible. And Kate? Gotta love her. :-)

Todd's truck came out of the whole downed tree debacle relatively unscathed. Some dents and a bent antenna, but other than that we got pretty lucky. (Not that it matters all that much because it's a work truck, meaning Todd's employers would cover it.) Crazy storm, but everyone is okay.

And THANK YOU for the help in drafting, revisions, whatever. Trust me when I say it's invaluable. :-)

  8. I find it a little amusing to see all the fuss people are making here in the US over the royal baby. It was all over CNN yesterday, and I'm thinking, "You people fought a war to separate yourselves from the British royal family... and now you're devoting hours of excited news coverage to the birth of a future king of England?" I guess time heals all wounds. :)

Well done on getting to 25K, Jaime! Don't be put off by wordiness--let the words flow!

    1. I always think about the oddity of Americans swooning over the British royal family too. But then again, my mom was a big Princess Diana fan so I grew up with that fandom and kind of get it. If the royals were here in America, I think we'd be far more jaded and less peppy over their every move. The distance is probably key.

Then again, our queen seems to be Kim Kardashian, so are we really any better off?

      Delete
    2. Despite the fact that the US is no longer under British control, I think everyone can appreciate a good fairy tale, and Will & Kate's story feels like a modern day fairy tale. Plus, who doesn't love good news? There's so much awful news on a daily basis, I think people want to cling to the celebratory news. And babies are always worth celebrating. Easy to get swept up by it all, don't you think?

Not too worried about wordiness since I kind of love hitting that delete key in revisions. ;-)

    3. I admit, I recorded and watched Will and Kate's wedding.

  9. Congrats on hitting the 25K mark! That's exciting! And wordiness, smordiness, that's easy to fix. It's so much easier to cut than add in my opinion. :)

And yes, there were a couple of scenes in A FINE BALANCE that absolutely haunted me. But it is so very fine.

I haven't seen New Girl, but I love Zoey Deschanel. She's one of those people that is pretty much fantastic in everything. And with that clip, how could I not watch it RIGHT NOW! :)

    1. I'm really not all that worried about the wordiness. It's kind of a rush to watch the words disappear when I hit the delete key in revisions. I had LOTS of practice on my first WIP, so I'm ready to take it on!

A FINE BALANCE is so well written and captivating even while it's heartbreaking and disturbing at times. A few scenes in particular stand out in my mind, but still such a good book!

Zooey Deschanel is just so quirky and fun, and this show had a number of laugh out loud moments. I definitely recommend it. :)

  10. I love Schmidt! I'm so behind on New Girl, I really need to catch up! (Especially so I can get to a certain part!)

I was excited for the baby, but mostly because I really like Kate Middleton. I felt so bad that she had to come out and have all those cameras and people screaming at her after she literally just had a baby! The little bubba looks so cute and smooshy, though (but that's how I feel about all babies. I'm a very broody girl :)

    1. Schmidt was kind of ugh in the first couple of episodes, but he grew on me fast. He's so, so funny! There's just so much to love about that show, especially Nick + Jess. <3

I really like Will & Kate, so I was super excited. I feel like they've gone out of their way to endear themselves to the public, to come across as normal as possible, which only makes me love them more. Watching William carry out the car seat with Baby Cambridge in it, strap him in, and then drive his little family away felt SO normal to me. You know, despite the cameras and cheering crowds lol. And the little prince is definitely cute and smooshy. I was captivated by his tiny little fingers.

  13. New Girl definitely gets funnier as it progresses. It's one of the shows I watch same day or next day on the DVR. If you haven't yet seen The Mindy Project, that's another one I'd recommend. It also takes a few episodes to get going, but it has such a funny little cast and it balances absurdist and sweet in the same way that Parks & Rec does. I just caught up with all the episodes.

Great going on your WIP! I'm looking forward to getting back to writing, but I have one more long weekend ahead of me, another writing conference. I might be able to squeeze in some writing time today, then back to the grind next week :)

Yay for closing in on 25K! Ahh, the wordiness. I'm so there. Even as I'm blathering away in my MS, I'm thinking: Well, this is definitely going to get cut. Yet, sometimes I need to do that kind of word-vomit writing to work out what the important bits are. If that even makes sense. :-)

I also loved how they're comparing that Kate wore a polka-dot dress very similar to the one Princess Diana wore when she stepped out with Prince William. Love it all.

Prince George (he finally has a name! :D) is totally adorable. You're so right about some of the coverage of this event just being silly. Here in Canada it was pretty ridiculous at times too. Anchors would ask reporters on site absolutely redundant and stupid questions. One day they were discussing the specifics of labour, like dilation and whatnot in reference to Kate. I mean, really. Do we need to be discussing this? I hope the media gives them a break at least for a while so they can settle into this new parenthood thing.

I can't wait for Season 3 of NEW GIRL to start up. Such a good show! And I agree, it's about darn time Nick + Jess got together. :)

    1. Isn't it great? I could seriously sit and watch this clip over and over again. Love it! Actually, I should just watch the episode over and over again. ;-) I've been meaning to get caught up on The Mindy Project actually. Should do that soon.

And hooray for positive news! There's no shortage of crap news, so I'll take the good stuff whenever I can get it. :)

  29. Oh, I love New Girl. Nick and Schmidt are probably my favorite characters. I love when they do flashbacks when they were in college. So funny.

I love the name that Will and Kate picked. Prince George Alexander Louis is just so classic and great meaning behind it.

Congrats on your writing progress! Have a great weekend!

    1. Nick and Schmidt are so, so funny. And you're right, the flashbacks are especially funny. :P

I was rooting for James for the new baby, but Prince George is a nice tip of the hat to the queen's father, George VI. And it does sound so classic.

Hope you have a great weekend too! :)

  30. All that baby news was definitely fun to watch. I think my favorite part was the Town Crier. What an awesome job! :)

Congrats on all the words! I definitely need to check out New Girl. So many shows to catch up on!

    1. It was so much fun! And I can't believe they still actually have a town crier. So crazy!

I'm not writing all that many words so far this week, but I am getting some revision done, so that's good. You should definitely check out New Girl. The episodes are only half an hour in length, so it's pretty easy to get caught up. :)

  31. I loved following the #RoyalBaby news! I was excited too. Heck, so many folks in the US stalked Kim K's pregnancy...now *that* I don't understand.

Way to go with your 25K! So impressed with your consistent progress. I didn't realize you were also undertaking an R&R. Wish you so much luck with that as well.

    Have a wonderful week!

    1. I was so excited about this baby, which is not something I was expecting. I really like Will & Kate, though, so it shouldn't have been all that surprising I guess. And as for Kim K's baby, I'm so there with you. Don't get it one bit.

I didn't write as much as I would have liked this week, but I did get some work done on my R&R, so that's a good thing. Still not where it should be, but I think it's getting there.

Hope you have a great weekend! :D

  32. I just wanted to say thank you. This is the first week I joined the linky and it has been a lot of fun reading everyone's responses. This is a great meme and I look forward to making connections with this great group of people!

    1. I'm so happy you decided to join us! It's so great to see what everyone has been working on, getting accomplished. Definitely encouraging and it's hard not to get excited about your own work. I'm glad you're enjoying the meme and it's nice to meet you! :D

  33. Slightly disappointed that I didn't win. This thing is rigged! Ha ha ha!

I think I've just been generally linking to my blog in the past and not my actual post. Fixed that this week. I'm really excited for the upcoming week and a bit scared because there is something I have to do that I won't enjoy doing.

Congrats for getting to the 25K mark! I think I should start my novel soon. I have a really good start (that I'm not going to use at all in my novel! lol) and I think I can write it easily (yeah right!). I really want to start connecting with people on their blogs. It's really tough because I don't have much time. I've been rocking twitter lately so bug me @daniduck. I'll try to check out all the great blogs here this week.

    1. It's definitely challenging to find time to get around to all the blogs. I've been breaking it up a bit, but I still do the bulk of my visiting on Wednesdays. You should totally start your novel! It's amazing how it all comes together, how things crop up that you didn't anticipate. So exciting and fun. :)

  34. Congrats on reaching 25k!!
I haven't started New Girl yet. I have to admit, I find Zoey to be more irritating than adorable (I know, I know! I'm ducking out of the way of all the New Girl fans.)But I'll probably like the show once I start watching.

    1. Thanks, Lily! I haven't worked on my WIP much this week, but I've been plugging away at revisions, so that's a good thing. I hope to get back to writing new words very soon. As for Zooey Deschanel, I'm not always a huge fan, but I get a kick out of this show. I think maybe because all of the characters are weird and funny, she stands out less as the weird, quirky girl on the show. It might surprise you! Have a great weekend! :)

  35. Honestly, I feel like Prince George is more relevant than Kimye's baby, and where were all of the tweets slamming the people following that? (Also, I'm still bitter about them naming their poor child North. I *live* in the Northwest, and I seriously doubt either of them know where it is, let alone have set foot in it.)

Congrats to Raven for winning the care package!

And good luck with your writing this week :)

    1. So much more relevant, I agree. North West (*snicker* *snort*) is never going to rule the Commonwealth (God forbid), so I think that edges Prince George closer to the top of my Give A Rip list. ;-) When we were in London in May 2012, we went for afternoon tea at a hotel just as Kimye was arriving. The paparazzi was insane! I was kind of bummed that it was only them lol.

Hope your writing is coming along well.

Have a great weekend, Stephanie! :D

  36. Congrats on hitting 25K!

I don't think there's anything wrong with being excited for the royal baby. It is nice to have some good news go viral for once!

I haven't watched THE NEW GIRL but I do have Netflix so I should start watching at some point! I've heard so many positive reviews.

Good luck with this week's goals!

    1. Thanks, Ghenet!

Babies are always worth celebrating, especially when they're as adorable as the new Prince George. (And seriously, how cute was William cuddling his new little boy and then carrying him in the car seat to the car? So cute!)

NEW GIRL is totally weird and funny. I plowed through Seasons 1 & 2 in no time. I like a show that can make me laugh out loud and this one definitely did.

Good luck with your writing goals, Ghenet! And I hope you have a great weekend. :)

    1. I like happy news so much. While we need to be apprised of the not-so-happy news as well, it's nice to have a break in the bad news. And Prince George is just adorable. :-)

  38. As you know, I LOVE the bangs. Super fun and fashionable, Jaime! Way to go with your WiP(s) this week. I totally get what you're saying about planning. I'm going to have to do some more of that one of these days too. Looking forward to your thoughts on THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US. I've had my eye on that one for awhile.
