YA Superlative Blogfest: Day 2

Head on over to the following host blogs for more info on this blogfest:
Tracey NeithercottKaty UppermanAlison Miller, and Jessica Love

(All titles are linked to their Goodreads pages.)

KENJI in UNRAVEL ME
(Tahereh Mafi)
This was a tough category for me, and I almost left it blank, but when I started flipping back through some of my 2013 reads, Kenji leaped out at me as being a real source of laughs in Books 1 + 2 of this series. He's definitely what I'd call comic relief in this series.

MATTY + SPENCER in HOW MY SUMMER WHEN UP IN FLAMES
(Jennifer Salvato Doktorski)
This was another category that I struggled with because I'm not clear on whether this is Rock Star in the musician sense of the word or more in a "this person is so freaking cool" sense. I went with musician and came up with these two characters who always seemed to have guitars in hand all throughout the book's cross-country road trip.

(Maggie Stiefvater)
I know for certain that I gave this award to Ronan last year for THE RAVEN BOYS, but he still feels deserving of this title. I feel like we've gained more insight into Ronan's motives and I will say he's my second favourite Raven Boy (next to Gansey, of course), but he still comes off as incredibly volatile and spoiling for a scrap any chance he can get. All in all, I'm not sure I really blame him.

CAPTAIN THORNE in SCARLET
(Marissa Meyer)
This was a bit of a toughie, but I think Captain Thorne was what you'd call a bit of a flirt, if I'm remembering correctly. I suppose there are others who could have taken home this title, but for whatever reason, Thorne came to mind as the most deserving.

CELAENA in CROWN OF MIDNIGHT + GWYNETH in EMERALD GREEN
(Sarah J. Maas)                                             (Kerstin Gier)
I'm not really sure that either FMC would label herself this way, but both have a soft spot for (and don) some seriously great fashion in their respective books. For Celaena I think it's a way to step away from her role as assassin even for a bit, and for Gwyneth it's to blend in seamlessly on her time travelling escapades. In both cases I loved reading about the gorgeous gowns.

BLUE SARGENT in THE DREAM THIEVES
(Maggie Stiefvater)
There are a lot of FMCs that I like, but out of all of them I would most love to hang out with Blue...and Maggie S....and, of course, their merry band of Raven Boys. I think being BFFs with Blue and hanging at her place would NEVER get boring, don't you think?

(Maggie Stiefvater)                                      (Kasie West)
In all honesty, I could just say ALL THE BOYS here, but that's a bit of a cop-out and there isn't space for all those book covers. So, I went with two book boys who felt more realistic as choices. As much as I love characters like Perry and Roar, I'm completely incapable of picturing them in a high school scenario. It just doesn't mesh. Gansey and Xander would've been (still are) my type.

BROOKS in PREMEDITATED
(Josin L. McQuein)
My first thought was Gansey (again), because he fits a certain presidential "type", but I don't think there's any way he'd aspire to take on that lofty role. If anything, I think he'd run screaming in the opposite direction. Brooks in PREMEDITATED, however, is a similar type of character, but I don't think he'd have nearly as big issues with the title and the responsibility that comes with it.

CATH + REAGAN in FANGIRL
(Rainbow Rowell)
This is a tie between roomies. Cath is quirky in a diehard-fangirl-bordering-on-hermit kind of way, but Reagan is just as quirky in her sorta kinda misanthropy. They were both so quirky, it was just fun watching them interact and form a friendship on the page.

WARNER in UNRAVEL ME
(Tahereh Mafi)
I'm not so sure if it's "love to hate" or just "love" after reading both DESTROY ME and UNRAVEL ME. Gaining that insight into Warner's reasons for why he does the things he does, not to mention seeing events from a different perspective and realizing they weren't what we thought, makes it tough to decide whether to love or hate him. Can't wait to see where Mafi takes this guy.

MR. GLASS in UNSPOKEN + UNTOLD
(Sarah Rees Brennan)
Okay, I'm totally cheating on this one. I just finished reading UNSPOKEN (2012) this past week and UNTOLD will be arriving by Wednesday, at which time I will be devouring it, so that's how I'm rationalizing this pick. Kami's dad is one of my favourite parental figures in all of YA. He's hilarious and his relationship with his children in general, but Kami in particular is really special.

(Maggie Stiefvater)
Oh, Gansey. How could I not pick you for this category? Gansey and THE DREAM THIEVES pretty well win all the superlatives. Well, except maybe "Girl You'd Most Want For Your BFF"...and I suppose a few others as well. I think Gansey is what you'd call a bit of a nerd, but he's that kind of nerd you can't help but classify as cool. I mean, obsessing over a Welsh legend? So nerdy, but so cool.

  1. I almost picked Ronan for the riot, and I almost picked him last year, too. I do remember you choosing him for this last year! Agree with you completely on Thorne as flirt and Blue as BFF :)

    1. It's funny, but somehow I completely wasn't even thinking of all the leading characters in every single dystopian I've read. I'm pretty sure they're all prime candidates for this superlative. Derp. But Ronan still fits the superlative rather well, so I'm still satisfied with that answer. And Blue as a BFF would be *awesome*! :D

  2. I can assure you that Kami's dad continues to be awesome in Untold.

    1. I figured as much, so I took a gamble and sorta kinda cheated. ;-) Can't wait for my copy of UNTOLD to get here today or tomorrow! (I'm rooting for today.)

  3. I didn't even think of Gansey for coolest nerd, but he certainly is. Gansey. Oh Gansey. Oh Gansey. He could win almost all the categories for me. I also put Ronan in the "Most Likely to Start a Riot" category, and like you, I think it's usually warranted.

    1. Gansey is the coolest everything. He wins everything, in my opinion. ;-) I loved gaining more insight into Ronan in THE DREAM THIEVES, especially understanding why he acts out like he does. Such a great character even if my first choice will always be Gansey.

  4. Sorry if this is a double post. I just tried to post my comment and it disappeared. The gist: Your Dream Thieves picks are awesome, and this is the first time I've realized Gansey is a nerd. Total nerd. I never thought of him that way.

    1. I think we're both just blinded by Gansey's coolness that we don't quite remember that he's a bit of a nerd. But that's the perfect combo, in my opinion! :-)

  5. Reading this post reminded me of how many awesome 2013 books I still haven't read! Cath was a good pick for quirkiest. I put her as the coolest nerd on my list.

    1. I've added at least a few books to my TBR list, as well as requested some from the library. That's one of the best parts of this Superlative Blogfest, wouldn't you agree? Cath could very easily have ended up under Coolest Nerd on my list (she totally is!), but I was kind of hung up on Gansey. :-)

  6. All great choices, Jaime! And so many books I still need to read!

    1. Thanks, Alison! As I've been making the rounds, I've either been adding books to my TBR list or requesting them from the library. This is definitely a great reminder of books we need to read! :-)

  7. I see a lot of THE DREAM THIEVES in today's post, Jaime! Must be a favorite of yours. ;-) It was smart to include both Cath and Reagan for quirkiest character. I want to sit at their table in the dining hall!

    1. It's actually kind of embarrassing how many categories I almost put THE DREAM THIEVES under lol. :P Cath and Reagan are both characters I didn't initially love, but now I can say with certainty that I want to sit at their dining hall table as well!

  8. Oh I forgot about Matty and Spencer! They were sweet - I wouldn't mind them tagging along on my road trip. The more I think about it, the more I realised how much enjoyed How My Summer Went Up In Flames.

    1. I really had to dig deep for something to put in the Rock Star category. I honestly couldn't think of anyone! And then I remembered something about guitars in that book, so I ran with it. It was a pretty cute book. :-)

  9. I've never heard of How My Summer Went Up In Flames, but if it has people with guitars I need to read it!

    1. It was a fun road trip book and I totally enjoyed it. Nerdy boys with guitars were kind of the icing on the cake. ;-)

  10. Oh man, I guess Gansey totally is a nerd! Sometimes I forget that he's not just Logan Huntzberger (although I totally picture him as a young Matt Czuchry!) Great pick. And I'm so glad you loved Unspoken (at least, I'm guessing)--I think a re-read of that and then FINALLY reading Untolf might be the next things on my list. I'm teaching Unspoken in my Expressions of Femininity class because HELLO, talk about GREAT female characters.

    1. Matt Czuchry...interesting! I suppose I could maybe see that. (I took a couple minute break from watching old The Good Wife episodes featuring Mr. Czuchry to come write this.) I wasn't sure of what I thought of him on Gilmore Girls, but I love him on The Good Wife. My copy of UNTOLD just showed up in the mail today, so I'm totally psyched about that. I think it will be my next read. And yes, I totally loved UNSPOKEN. There are definitely great female characters in that book. How awesome that you're teaching it!

  11. I'd kinda forgotten about wanting to read Unspoken, and here Untold is out already (sometimes that is an advantage, though). The Distance Between Us is on my list too!

    1. I really enjoyed UNSPOKEN. So much so that I immediately ordered a copy of UNTOLD, which just showed up yesterday! (It's what I'm reading next.) And you're right, sometimes it's *definitely* an advantage when more than one book in a series is out. No waiting! :-)

  12. I forgot all about Thorne for biggest flirt, otherwise I would've chosen him over Maxon. BOO. (Better yet, I would actually flirt back with Thorne. Or at least try to.)
