Ready. Set. WRITE! (Week 3)

Welcome back to Ready. Set. WRITE! If you’re wondering what RSW is all about, it’s a summer long writing intensive with the purpose of writing, revising, planning, and keeping each other accountable. We will be sharing our goals on Mondays, keeping our posts BRIEF (2-3 lines per heading) so we can spend more time on writing and less time on blogging. You can sign up at any of the other host blogs (Alison's, Katy's, Erin's) every Monday. And don't forget to hop around to encourage other participants. For more info about RSW and a link to our super fun buttons, go here.

{Again, please, please, please remember to keep your posts BRIEF. Thanks! ☺}

HOW I DID ON LAST WEEK'S GOALS
I didn't end up actually writing on all five of the days I planned to this week, but I did surpass my overall word count goal by adding 4000 new words to IN THE END. As for WATCH OF NIGHT, I met my goal of revising two chapters. (I kept a record here.)

MY GOAL(S) FOR THIS WEEK
• add 500+ words, five days this week to IN THE END or a total of 3000 words for the week if I can't do all five days
• revise two chapters of WATCH OF NIGHT and make a few other tweaks

A FAVOURITE LINE FROM MY STORY OR ONE WORD/PHRASE THAT SUMS UP WHAT I WROTE/REVISED
This is totally rough, but here goes... "I nod once, refusing to elaborate on the very thing keeping me awake at night, gnawing me open from the inside out like that gnarly as frak chestburster in Spaceballs." (from my WiP, IN THE END)

THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE I FACED THIS WEEK
Trying to figure out where to start on Part II of my WiP. I have an outline, but it wasn't detailed enough, so I felt a bit blocked.

SOMETHING I LOVE ABOUT MY WIP
The setting. Definitely. It's based on Petoskey, MI, a lakeside resort town my family visited frequently when I was growing up.

{I suggest muting it. Unless you like tourist bureau voice.}

*

HOW I DID:
Monday --» added 1000 new words to IN THE END
Tuesday --» NO WORDS
Wednesday --» revised a chapter of WATCH OF NIGHT
Thursday --» added 1100 new words to IN THE END
Friday --» NO WORDS
Saturday --» NO WORDS
Sunday --» NO WORDS...I suck :-/

Happy Writing/Revising/Planning!

    1. That part in SPACEBALLS always grossed/creeped me out, so the visual really stuck with me. It was tough meeting my goal this past week, so I'm hoping this coming week goes a lot better! Should be challenging though, because I expect to be busier. Eek!

    1. Thanks, Alison! I actually kind of hate sharing stuff I've written because I stress WAY too much about it lol. Ah well. Have a great week! :D

  5. LOVING the Spaceballs reference, Jaime. One of my favorite movies! "I am your father's brother's mother's cousin's roommate." "What does that make us?" "ABSOLUTELY NOTHING" hehe. Good luck with the rest of your progress this week. Not updating today (I have another post re #agentsday) but I managed to fix the 'baby' plot line and this thrills me to no end. :-)

    1. Thanks, Rachel! I haven't seen SPACEBALLS in a long time, but that scene always stuck with me because it was so, so gross lol. I like the part you quoted. Haha! I'll swing on by your post and check it out right away! :D

  6. That line made me laugh! My husband loves Spaceballs, so I've seen it a *few* times. I'm so glad you shared this one. It gives us such a fantastic feel for your WiP! Best of luck with your goals this week, friend!

    1. Thanks, Katy! It feels a bit clunky to me, but I thought what the heck. I haven't seen SPACEBALLS in a while, but I'm probably overdue for a rewatch. ;-) Good luck this week, Katy! :D

    1. I will always love that area of Michigan. Since I've spent a fair amount of time there, I kind of felt like I could write a WiP inspired by it, you know? It's making me want to go back! :D

  8. I live in Michigan and I love that you based your WIP here. Sounds like you got a lot done even though you didn't write on all the days you wanted to. Good luck getting over your block on part II.

    1. I grew up in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, just across the border from Michigan, so we spent A LOT of time there. Mackinac Island actually pops up in this WiP too. All of this is making me want to go back and visit so badly! :D

    2. I also grew up in Michigan (though much further south) and have spent many summers in Petoskey area. My aunt goes to Charlevoix every year for the past 15-30 years and I've gone up there with them sometimes. It's beautiful. I'm planning to set my next project in Michigan so I have my own experiences to draw on.

    3. Charlevoix! We've totally spent time there as well. I love Michigan so much! I think it's high time I took a trip back thataway, so I can share this wonderful place with my hubby. :-)

    1. Haha! I haven't seen it in a while, but I'm probably overdue for a re-watch. That part with the chestburster always grossed me right out, so it kind of stuck with me. Good luck meeting your goals as well, Erin! :D

  11. Congrats on surpassing your word count goal!! I am inspired by the setting in my MS, as well. As a reader, setting is also really important to me. It doesn't have to be one specific type of place, but just somewhere that gets my imagination going. Love your WiP line. Spaceballs FTW!

    1. Thanks, Rebekah! It was tough meeting my goals for some reason this week, so I'm hoping this week will be better. (Though my hubs is getting home from Texas after being gone for 6 weeks, so it's doubtful. LOL) Setting my story in this part of Michigan (despite creating a fictional town) is REALLY making me want to take a vist. You know, for research purposes and whatnot. ;-) I think I might need to watch SPACEBALLS again soon. It's been too long! :D

  12. Congrats on blowing your word count goal out of the water, Jaime! And it looks like your story has a gorgeous setting! Could I tag along with your characters, pretty please? :)

    1. Thanks, Kaitlin! It was a challenge this week, but it's so satisfying to meet my goals. The town in my story is fictional, but the place on which it's based is so incredibly beautiful and quaint. I'd love to go back and visit for research purposes. ;-)

  13. Wow, that water is gorgeous! I wish I could go to a lakeside resort right now. =) Yay on your word count and here's to this week going swimmingly well. (heh, see what I did there?) ;)

    1. That part of Michigan is truly gorgeous. I haven't been back in a while, but I'd love to take a 'research' trip sometime soon! This week will be SO much tougher (my hubs gets home after being gone for 6 weeks), but I'm hoping I can still meet my goals. Starting today! :D

  15. Awesome job passing your goal. Always a good feeling. That's how I do it, if I don't get it in a day I have all week to make up.
I like that line. I cracked up at Spaceballs....oh that movie.
Can't load video at work so I'll have to come back.
    Good luck this week.

    1. Thanks, Mandie! It really is a good feeling. I'm a bit worried about this week as I'll be super busy, but here's hoping I meet my goal again. That's where having a weekly target for words is good too. I haven't seen SPACEBALLS in ages, but I'm thinking I might have to pencil in a re-watch. So, so silly but hilarious! Good luck this week! :D

    1. I think because this story is very character-focused, it makes it a little bit more difficult to pin down what needs to actually be happening, you know? I think I finally have some good ideas, but it will be tough still. We'll see how it goes! :D

    1. Thanks, Susan! I would have liked to write all 5 days, but I'm happy with surpassing the word goal I set. I'm glad you liked the line I shared. I'm always so stressed out about sharing my writing, especially when people can't see the context from which it was pulled. Ah well. Good luck this week! :D

  19. That's so cool that you're using a setting that's so close to your heart. That would probably be a smart thing for me to try since I tend to completely avoid dealing with the setting. Have a great week!

    1. I don't normally heed that "write what you know" advice, but when it comes to setting (which I struggle with big time) I find it's nice to go with somewhere I know. The town in my story is fictional, but it's definitely based off of Petoskey, so that makes it much easier to write. :D

  20. Congrats on the progress! I hope you're able to reach all your goals for this week!!

  21. Well, you already know how much I love Petoskey, especially since Trev and I spent part of our honeymoon there. I want to go back and visit so badly! The line from your WIP totally cracked me up. Now I have this going through my head: "Hello my baby, hello my honey, hello my ragtime gal..." and probably will for the next month lol. You're doing awesome on your goals! Hope it's another great writing week for you! :)

    1. I would love to take a trip back that way sometime. You know, I could call it research. ;-) It's been way too long! I almost included "Hello, ma baby!" in that line, actually, but it felt clunky enough as it was lol. I hope I'm able to meet my goals this week. For whatever reason, it seems like my plate is extremely full all week. Guess I'll just have to squeeze writing in whenever I can! :D
