I've Been Tagged!

I was tagged by both my sister Erin and my friend Robin in the My Character Bloghop, so I thought I'd introduce you to Nova from my WiP IN THE END. Thanks for the tags, ladies! (You can check out their My Character posts here and here, respectively.)

IN THE END is a YA contemporary that has a similar premise to TUMBLE & FALL by Alexandra Coutts...only not quite. Mine has a little added something something to differentiate it. Actually, a kind of big something something, but anyway. (Side note: I had already started writing IN THE END when I discovered the existence of TUMBLE & FALL. Ughhh. Needless to say, I was somewhat bummed. I haven't yet read this comp, so I don't know exactly how  similar the premise is, but I thought I'd still mention it.)

Annnnyway...meet Nova!

1) For reasons relating to the plot of my WiP, Nova wears a Walking Dead tee almost like an ironic uniform for the first half of the book. (She does make sure to wash it regularly, of course. Because ewww.)

2) Nova has to be the adult too often in her relationships with her all-but-estranged father and going-off-the-rails-because-of-circumstances mother. (Disclaimer: I’m not usually a fan of crap parents in YA—they’re overdone and sort of a cliché—but this is how I kept envisioning them, so crap parents it is.)

3) Nova (along with BFF, Avni) has a penchant for 90s movies, but thanks to the events in my WiP, her cinematic tastes have zeroed in hardcore on disaster movies, regardless of era. Her favourite at the moment: Deep Impact (1998).

4) I originally picked Nova’s name because supernovas were relevant to my story, but this has since changed somewhat. It was supposed to be sort of tongue in cheek. Nova is the feminized version of the Latin word novus, meaning “new”, which is still pretty significant to the events of my WiP.

5) Nova has had a long-time crush on Ezra Harris, one of her high school’s football players. She’s not much of a football fan, but she IS an Ezra fan, which means she has attended every one of their home games, cheering him on and admiring him from afar. Too bad he has no idea. Well…yet.

One last teensy detail: I picture her looking a little bit like Carey Mulligan. -------»

Oh, and one other teensy detail: This is how I picture Nova's love interest, Ezra, HERE.*
(That's right, folks. I doubt I need an explanation why because YOWZA. Am I right?)

I've noticed that others participating in this bloghop have included a song that kind of sums up the essence of their characters. I have a playlist that feels appropriate to my WiP and whatnot, but there isn't really a song that screams Nova, or that sums her up.

There is, however, this song by Avril Lavigne that seems fitting to a teen faced with the possibility of having her life snuffed out suddenly. I apologize so, so much for this. So terribly much. Fair warning: there is some salty-ish LANGUAGE in the video, so...**

Addition: Just realized I forgot to tag someone. Oops. Since you would like to play along, I'm tagging you, Rachel! Can't wait to hear about your character. Oh, and I'm tagging anybody else who would love to take part. Tell us about your character!

* Minus the stache and beard, mind you. Think baby faced FNL era MBJ.
** I should mention, as a Canadian I am not required to like Avril Lavigne. Or her hubs Chad Kroeger from Nickelback. Argh.***
*** I don't, in fact, like Avril Lavigne. Or Nickelback. Wow, this post is spiralling out of control...

  1. Nova's such a lovely name, and you're WIP sounds really interesting! :) It's always a pain when we discover there's already a story similar to the one we want to write, but we all tell stories differently. Most of the time I don't think the plot is important as long as you have the combo of great characters and an equally great story teller. ^_^

    1. Thanks, Jess! I liked the name even besides picking something significant to the story. I would normally be bothered by the fact that another story so similar to mine exists, but I'm actually kind of okay with it this time around. I think you're right that the combo of characters and great storytelling can wipe away any problems of too similar plots. Thanks for swinging by! :D

  2. LOVE THIS. Can I play along? :D I love the name Nova and I LOVE that picture of Carey *as* Nova. I can definitely picture her!

If you're looking for a newer comp title, I suggest WE ALL LOOKED UP by Tommy Wallach (a 2015 debut). Tumble & Fall is an okay comp but it did really poorly, sales wise no matter how hard they pushed. :(

    1. I'm so glad you're going to play along! I totally forgot to tag anyone initially, so I'm thrilled you volunteered! I think Carey Mulligan has this very young look, so she could totally pass as my high school aged Nova.

Thanks again for mentioning that comp title. I'll have to check it out when it comes out. I have TUMBLE & FALL, but you're right about it not doing well at all. I was actually pretty surprised by that, but hey, it makes me feel loads better about the fact that I'm writing such a similar story. Thanks for swinging by, Rachel! :D

  3. Oops, didn't realize my speakers were turned up so loud - that's a lot of Avril Lavigne in the morning :)

Love the details about Nova's name origin and the fact she's secretly crushing on a football player. I may or may not have done that myself in high school...

    1. Haha! Oops! Oh, Avril lol.

I went to an all-girls uniform Catholic school for most of high school, so there weren't any football players to crush on. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure I would have felt much the same way. ;-) Thanks for swinging by, Jennifer!

  4. So much fun to learn about Nova, Jaime! And I happen to love that name -- so unique. Also... A crush on a football player? Yes, please! Best of luck with this project. It sounds like a story I'd love to read!

    1. Thanks, Katy! I'm really enjoying telling Nova's story. I feel like there's just so much potential here and that's exciting! I just couldn't resist the crush on the football player. Especially a football player that resembles Michael B. Jordan in my head. Yes, please is right! I would be thrilled if this ended up being a story you'd love to read. Thanks for dropping by, Katy! :D

  5. I love using significant names, even if it's hard to think of the right one. Nova's a great name, and the story sounds really interesting! :)

    1. I got so hung up on significant names in my first WiP that I've tried to deviate from that practice somewhat in other stuff I've written. This was just too good to pass up, though. ;-) Plus, I just like the name Nova. Thanks for swinging by, Emma! :D

    1. Thanks, Ghenet! I hope she's awesome. :-) I'm really enjoying writing her story anyway. And as for Ezra, I couldn't picture him any other way than Michael B. Jordan because holy canoli he's perfect. Love him! :-)

  7. I approve of her t-shirt selection XD

I went and saw Deep Impact at the cinema with my boyfriend back in the day. Hahaha. NOW I FEEL SO OLD! And Nova is an awesome name :D

    1. Haha! The Walking Dead tee was one of the very first details that popped into my head when I initially thought about Nova as a character. It just felt so fitting to her character. She also has "It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" by REM as her ringtone lol. I don't think I saw Deep Impact in the theatre, but I definitely saw it and Armageddon on video when they first came out. So, yep. We're both old! ;-)

  8. Nova is an amazing name! She sounds like a great character, a character I would love to read about. :)

    1. Thanks, Chrys! I really liked the name and it was just too fitting for the story. I really hope she's a compelling character. I love writing her story, so that's a good thing! Thanks for swinging by! :D

  9. Avril Lavigne is married to Chad Kroeger?? Seriously?! Did someone out there wanted to one of the worst musicians to get married or something, because what are the odds?? Hah. Anyhow.
Umm, Ezra is yum. Nova sounds like a fun protagonist and I'm all kinds of intrigued by your WIP. You're giving us just enough to make me want to know all the details! :)

    1. Wow, that's just about the worst comment I've ever written. I think I was so shocked by two such cruddy pop stars falling in love and marrying each other. It addled my brain a bit. :)
I'm going to do the meme in my WUW post tomorrow. It's fun!

    2. Bahaha! That's about the only appropriate response to the Avril + Chad marriage. Eek! Let's hope they never procreate, right? LOL

I really have to agree that Ezra's inspiration is exceptionally yum. I really do love writing their story. I hope this story turns out well! Awesome that you're going to do the meme. I had fun doing it too. Thanks for popping by! :D

  10. Yep, Ezra is definitely inspirational. :) That's the one thing I haven't been able to do for my WIP is find a picture of my male MC. Which I think is the weirdest thing in the world considering how close attention I usually pay.

  11. I love how you mentioned that Nova actually washes her t-shirt. Probably good to point that out before people assume number two on the list is that she smells lol. And definitely no explanation required for why you'd model Ezra after Michael B. Jordan. Anyone with working eyeballs (and perhaps an undying love for FNL) should be able to figure that one out!

As for choosing an Avril Lavigne song, at least you didn't pick one by the Biebs. That might have ruined Canada Day. :P

  12. Jaime! This. Sounds. Awesome.

I'm so excited for you. I loved reading all of this. Love the title and love all the details. I need to have more fun with my books like this!

  13. Tumble & Fall is a more straightforward version of the end of the world--I think the twist on In the End *really* sets it apart. Also I don't recall any characters in T&F who could be played by MBJ, so... :) I am super-impatient for In the End to be done. I'm dying to read the rest of it!
