Ready. Set. WRITE! (Week 6)

Welcome back to Ready. Set. WRITE! If you’re wondering what RSW is all about, it’s a summer long writing intensive with the purpose of writing, revising, planning, and keeping each other accountable. We will be sharing our goals on Mondays, keeping our posts BRIEF (2-3 lines per heading) so we can spend more time writing and less time blogging. You can sign up at any of the other host blogs (KatyErinAlison,) every Monday. And don't forget to hop around to encourage other participants. For more information about RSW and a link to our super fun buttons, go here.

{And again, please remember to keep your posts BRIEF. Thanks! ☺}

HOW I DID ON LAST WEEK'S GOALS
I only ended up writing 2000 new words, but weirdly it was for the one I'm revising, so it was sort of double duty. I set a goal of revising one chapter, and ended up revising about two or three. I also went off on a WiP #3 bunny trail (it's already mostly drafted) all thanks to an agent's #MSWL on Twitter. This involved reading 1/2 of this WiP, wondering if I should revise it. 0_o

MY GOAL(S) FOR THIS WEEK
• add 2500+ new words to either IN THE END or WATCH OF NIGHT
• sort out issues in both of these WiPs (namely order of events) and revise some of WoN
• decide what to do about bunny trail WiP, ONLY ANNIE--revise it or set it aside for now?

ONE PHRASE THAT SUMS UP WHAT I WROTE/REVISED
A heated discussion that ends in a truce and a plan to join forces, for better or worse.

THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE(S) I FACED THIS WEEK
No big surprise, but my focus was all over the flipping map this week. Need to rein it in big time. Plus, I was away all weekend and didn't get enough done during the week beforehand, so add to that lack of foresight and planning as well. Shame on me.

SOMETHING I LOVE ABOUT MY WIP
Let's go with my YA sci-fi, WATCH OF NIGHT, again this week: When I received an R&R for this particular WiP, one of its biggest flaws according to the agent (and she was SO right, by the way) was a bad case of InstaLove with too much focus on the hot love interest. Now there's more of a love-hate, slow burn romance, which is so much better and so much more fun to write!

*

Before we go any further, we need to announce the winner of last week's Writer's Care Package:

Woohoo! Congrats, Stephanie!
Just send Erin a DM on Twitter with your

address and she'll get that sent out ASAP!

And now for this week's Ready. Set. WRITE! giveaway:

{It's pretty obvious what most of this is, except for the
tea-scented erasers and bunny-shaped paper clips.
The polish is "Watermelon" by Essie. Fun + summery!}

Just like last week, you get an entry for every week you participated in Ready. Set. WRITE! Of course, that not only means posting weekly check-ins, but also hopping around to some of the other participants' blogs to offer up writerly encouragement as well.

{Giveaway goes until Friday, July 18th
@ midnight and is open internationally!}

  1. Ooooh I like where the bunny trail is taking you :-) And I hear you about your focus being all over the place, that was me last week as well. Now, time to get serious. You can doooooo it, Jaime!

    1. I think I might have to step off the bunny trail, unfortunately. I'm already finding it tough to get through the projects I'm working on, so adding another to the heap seems like a *really* bad idea. Must finish the other projects first! Focus is so hard during the summer, but add to that thinking about and getting ready for our trip and I'm pretty much useless. Ah well! ;-)

  2. Love!!!! Love-hate relationships! They're my favorite! Would bunny trail mean swapping between 3 MSs? You are brave. I'm struggling with 2.
I've been finding it hard to focus too. Good luck this week!

    1. I really like love-hate relationships too, so I don't know why I went the InstaLove route initially. Ugh. The bunny trail *would* mean bouncing between three projects, so I think I'm just going to go ahead and say: Um...no. I need to focus on the two I'm already working on and just finish them already! It was a nice thought for a bit there, but such a bad idea. Here's to a more focused week! :-)

  3. Yeah - focus has been an issue for me too lately. I blame the World Cup. This week I'm sure I'll blame something else, lol. :)

Good luck this week with your goals, Jaime! You can do it!

    1. Oh, I know. I always have something to blame for my lack of focus. Really, it's just me being undisciplined and lazy lol. I really hope this week is better for both of us!

  4. Love/hate, slow-burn romances are my favorite -- so glad you're finding success getting your WiP to that place. And great job with your productivity this week, lady!

    1. You know, those are my favourite kinds of romances too. I really don't know how I ended up going the InstaLove route initially. I think it might be because I like writing kissing scenes too much lol. Bad Jaime. It's getting better though, slowly but surely. I know what I want it to be, now I just need to make that happen! :-)

  5. "WIP bunny trail" Love that! I go down those a lot myself :)

2000 words is a lot! Especially when you're revising. And add two more WIPs to the mix and you're rollin' this summer!

    1. I've decided to get the heck off the WiP bunny trail. It was a nice idea for a bit, but good grief, two projects is *more* than enough. Must finish those first! To be perfectly honest, I had plenty of time to get more done this week, so I'm kind of disappointed in myself. Here's hoping this week is much, much more productive! :-)

  6. Oh I get that feeling with MSWL. Good luck on that :)

    1. To have an agent describe something you've already drafted... So tempting to get it whipped into shape and sent off, but I think I'm going to ignore the pull. I have two projects already on the go, so I just need to finish them first. :-)

  7. Sounds like you got a lot done last week! Slow-burn romances are the best. Hope you hit all your goals this week! :)

    1. Blogger just ate my response. Ugh. Anyway, I had written that I really could have gotten more done this week. I spent a lot of time wasting time, so I'm kind of disappointed in myself. Hopefully this week will be more productive!

  8. YAY for an R&R!!!!! Oh jaime I am so excited for you. It means you are close. Congrats on getting things done for your WIP. MSWL is still a rabbit hole for me and I'm agented. :-)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Oh, I totally squandered the R&R. It was from over a year ago, so I think that ship sailed, especially since nobody is buying YA Sci-Fi. But that's okay, because she gave me wonderful advice and I finally know what to do with it. And it was a major boost having an agent actually like my writing, so I'm calling that a win for sure! :-)

      Delete
  9. Hey, that is pretty cool with the MSWL. If you love it still, you should give revising a chance! You were really productive this week, yay you. Good luck with your goals this week and with deciding on that older manuscript.

    1. It's kind of crazy to have an agent say they want a book that is spot-on what you've already drafted. I was tempted there for a bit to revise it, but I think it's a distraction I don't need right now. Looking over it, I realize it needs a TON of work, so I'm just going to leave it alone until I finish everything else I'm working on. :-)

  11. Love those love-hate romances :) That build up of tension is so much fun to read! Good luck with your decisions this week -- and the rest of you goals, too!

    1. I love love-hate relationships too, so it begs the question: How did I end up writing InstaLove to begin with. Eww. At least that part of things is mostly fixed now. The tension build up is not only fun to read, it's fun to write! Have a great week, Sara! :D

  13. Hmm, mystery WIP #3! It seems like it could be worth revising it and maybe fun to go back to an old work, too--but then you do seem to be making great progress with your revision and drafting, so maybe it would interrupt the flow you have going on. Whatever you decide I'm sure will be the right choice! It's always reassuring to see an agent actually seeking something you've written :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I've decided that WiP#3 needs to wait. It was tempting for a second there, but it's just a really bad idea right now. My focus is total poop right now, so adding a third project to the heap is, well, completely idiotic lol. I'm just going to finish what I'm working on and it will be waiting for me when I'm done. :-)

  14. Congrats on getting that 2000 words in. Juggling revisions and drafting is a little hectic, but it's part of the job. Thanks for sharing. :D

    1. Thanks! I really hope I'm better at doing the juggling thing this week! :-)

  15. It's tough to get that balance of what is "InstaLove" and what is too slow. I've done both! Pacing is a tough balance and I think it varies with projects.

That's wonderful news that you received a revise and resubmit! Encouraging :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It really is tough to strike that balance. I think it always bugged me, so having an agent confirm that was exactly what I needed. I may have missed the boat on the R&R (it was from over a year ago), but the advice she gave me is totally a win in my books. I'm still implementing the suggestions she made, and my story is already better for it! :-)

    1. I've decided to get off the bunny trail. I already have two projects on the go, so adding a third would be a really bad idea, especially with my focus issues. Ah well. It will be waiting for me when I finish these ones! :-)

  17. Sounds like a good suggestion on the InstaLove thing--although I'm still kind of a fan of the concept, lol. Yay for slow-burning love/hate-ness too, though! (Hooha for R & Rs!!!) And congrats on getting 2,000 words--it's more than I got this past week! Congrats to Stephanie as well!

    1. You know, I don't usually mind InstaLove all that much unless it's so completely ridiculous and over the top. But for this particular story, the slow burn thing works much, much better. Plus, it's my favourite type of romance. The R&R is from over a year ago (I kind of missed that boat), but I got so much out of her comments on my WiP that I'm calling it a win all around! :-)

  18. The best relationships, either real or fictional, tend to work best when they're slowly built towards, either starting as friends and then becoming more, or having some sexual/romantic tension for awhile, before the couple is finally able to be together in that way. Or, if a couple begins dating quickly, it should take awhile for them to become really close and lovey-dovey.

    1. They really do work a whole lot better over time. I don't mind InstaLove (unless it's completely over the top), but I much prefer the slow burn. :-)

  19. That sounds like a great bunny trail if it matches with a #MSWL! Good luck with all your goals this week. I hope you feel confident about whichever way you decide for ONLY ANNIE!

    Replies
    1. The bunny trail was super tempting for a couple seconds there, but I think I need to stay focused on the two projects I'm already juggling. That other project will be waiting for me. It's a bummer to miss out on sending something to an agent that they're looking for, but I'd probably just mess everything up if I scrambled to get it into shape. I'll just hold out for a bit longer, I think. :-)

      Delete
  20. The point is, you sat down and got those words out this week. That's the best part!

My two cents about the #MSWL bunny trail... only spend time on it if your heart is in it. I don't know the backstory of why you maybe stopped working on it, but that's what I would focus on when trying to decide what to work on. Easier said than done, of course. Good luck with your decisions and your focus this week! <3

    1. I think the bunny trail is the worst possible idea at this point in time. It's tempting, sure, but like you say, there's a reason why I stopped working on it awhile back. I still love the story, but now isn't the right time. It's a bummer to miss out on the #MSWL opportunity, but its the best thing right now. *Especially* since I'm struggling with the whole focus thing! :-)

    1. Working on more than one project usually works for me because if I'm not in the mood to work on one, I'm usually in the mood to work on the other. That said, it definitely takes longer to finish any one project. I'm going to try extra hard to stay focused this week! :-)

  28. Although you sound busy, you still did pretty freaking good with your wordage and revising! Give yourself some props. :) I was lucky I managed to do what I did this last week because I was stressed out. 1. Thanks, Leandra! I'm trying to tell myself that even though I didn't meet my goals exactly, I still got stuff done. The thing that does bum me out is that I had a lot of time that I could have filled with writing instead of lazing about doing other things. Hopefully this week will be better! I'm so happy you like the writer's pack. It was fun to put together! :D

  30. You know I'm partial to slow burn romance, so I'm eager to see how you've revamped that aspect of WoN, although I enjoyed it plenty in the original version as well. Wish I had an answer for you on what to do about ONLY ANNIE. What a tough decision when you have 3 awesome WIPs on the go! I hope you somehow feel more focused this week, which may be a tall order with your Europe trip coming up, but I think you can still get lots done before then. Good luck with your goals this week! Keep my posted on how you're doing! :)

    1. I didn't so much mind the relationship b/n my characters in the original version, but I think it will be much better now. Hope so anyway! I decided to let ANNIE sit for a while longer. I'm already struggling with focus, so there's no sense heaping more distractions on myself. I really just need to finish the two I've been working on. I keep adding crap to my To Do list, so it's going to be tough getting writing done this week. Still, I'm trying to buckle down. I'll see if there's anything I can send you to read. That would be most helpful! :D

  31. I love slow burn romances. I agree they are really fun to write (and read)! I'm letting myself work on two wips at once. I usually feel bad for not focusing all of my attention on one project at a time but my second wip is a YA Contemp so it allows me to take break a much needed break from worldbuilding which I like. Good luck with figuring out what to do with your third wip. I'm sure you'll make the right decision. Have a good week! :)
