What's Up Wednesday

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly blog hop created by me and my sister, Erin Funk, to help connect writers on this writing journey. With that aim in mind, if you'd like to join us, we encourage you to visit other WUW blogs each week, get to know some of the other writers taking part, and spread some writerly love! Don't forget to leave the link to your post in the widget at the end of this post. ***And please remember to link back to our host blogs and/or use one of the WUW buttons provided. We really appreciate it!***

For those of you who are new to WUW, here are the headings we are using:

WHAT I'M READING
WHAT I'M WRITING

WHAT INSPIRES ME RIGHT NOW
WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO

Welcome, and thank you for joining us!

WHAT I'M READING
I'm not entirely sure why (probably because it's so, so good), I was desperately craving a reread of ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS by Stephanie Perkins this week. I gobbled it up and swiftly moved on to LOLA AND THE BOY NEXT DOOR, which I'm still reading. Honestly, these books are just as good as the first time. I am eagerly anticipating ISLA AND THE HAPPILY EVER AFTER!

WHAT I'M WRITING
Not as much as I'd like, that's what. Like I mentioned on Monday in my Ready. Set. WRITE! post, I was overly distracted and overly busy thanks to Todd finally coming home. This is the best sort of distraction, though, so I'm not really all that bothered that I didn't get in as much writing as I would have liked. Here's to a more productive week. Onward and upward and whatnot.

WHAT INSPIRES ME RIGHT NOW
Still sharing stuff that I love (and what inspires me) about YA...

I kind of love that when you walk into a bookstore, the YA section isn't carved up into genres like a Thanksgiving turkey.
Fantasy can be sitting right next to contemporary, or even sandwiched between sci-fi and historical.
As someone who reads across the YA spectrum, this makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.
Like all of my peeps are gathered together for a big old party or something.

WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO
Um...jazz hands apparently. In full pipe and drum band attire. This past Saturday was our local Highland Games. I was supposed to play in the massed bands with my pipe and drum band, but silly self-doubter that I am, I completely chickened out. At the last possible minute. What can I say? I suffer from snare drummer performance anxiety.

The day wasn't a total write-off though, because I ended up getting a sgian dubh for my sock. (Pronounced skee-ən-DOO  and is basically a Scottish shiv lol.) Here's a pic of it.*

Yesterday was Canada Day, and the band took part in a flag-raising ceremony at the Royal Canadian Legion (which is who our band is sponsored by). It was a parade too, so that involved marching while playing which is SO stinking hard to do. For me, anyway. But since Canada Day is one of my favourite days, I really wanted to take part. And it went really well! It's the best I've played yet, so I was pretty thrilled about that. It was seriously hot, though, and in a kilt, a wool hat, and wool socks, it was a bit toasty. But what a great day all around! HAPPY BELATED CANADA DAY to my fellow Canadians!

(Here's some video proof that I actually took part in the parade.)

Not the best playing in the world, but I didn't completely suck. ;-)

* It's part of our pipe and drum band uniform, and is completely dull. Just for show.

SO, THAT WAS MY WEEK.
WHAT'S NEW WITH YOU?

  1. I'm not a fan of most contemporary YA, but I LOVED Anna and the French Kiss and Lola and the Boy Next Door. Definitely in my top ten favorite books. Thanks for sharing. :D

    1. I'm loving these books so much more on the second time through. How fantastic that that can happen, hey? :D

  2. Happy Canada Day :D Very nice jazz hands ;)

Some books just need a reread. I have several I love to read again when I've had a DNF run.

    1. Why thank you, Cole! I figured if I did a funny pose, it would detract from the fact that the whole ensemble makes me look about ten feet wide. Frigging plaid! LOL

You know, in all honesty, I'll probably never reread a good portion of the books on my shelf, but there's a small handful that will probably end up worn to bits by the time I'm done with them. Obviously, those are my absolute favourites. Hope you're having an awesome week! :D

  3. I adore Anna and the French Kiss. It's definitely on my (long) list of books I can read over and over again. Even though I haven't read LOLA, I'm super excited about ISLA. I read the first chapter a while back and I got so hooked, that I really want it to release now so I can continue reading.

Haha I love the picture and I'm glad the parade went well. :) Have a great week!

    1. LOLA was pretty darn great too! I haven't had much time to read lately, so I'm not all that far into my reread, but I fully anticipate getting sucked in all over again. Can't wait for ISLA! :D

  4. I haven't read any Stephanie Perkins, but I keep hearing great things about Anna and the French Kiss - I should probably check it out! It sounds as though you have a pretty good reason to be distracted from your writing, there's always next week! ;)

I love what you said about YA - it's great that we can see so many different genres all on one shelf!

(Great pic; those Highland Games sound like a lot of fun!)

    Have a great week! :)

    1. Stephanie Perkins' books are my absolute favourite YA contemporary reads. Hands down. I get totally sucked in, which is wonderful. Can't wait for Book 3 to come out in August! I'm hoping there will be more time to read and write this week than last. I'm losing momentum and that's not good! Ah well. Hope you're having an awesome week! :D

  5. Yay! I haven't had the chance to see you play your snare drum before, so it was cool to watch you in action! Hopefully someday I'll get to see you play in person finally!

You're making me want to spend some time with both Anna and Lola. It's been a while since I last read them, and with Isla coming out soon, I'm very tempted to reread them. Alas the TBR list is so long I'm not sure I'll be able to squeeze them in before then.

Hope you and Todd are enjoying your time together! I'm sure once he's been home for a bit you'll be able to settle into a writing routine again. :)

    1. Well, I managed to keep in sync with the rest of the band marching-wise, and when I flubbed up my drumming, I was able to hide it for the most part. All in all, it was a great experience and I was pretty proud of myself. :-) Though, it was so stinking hot! That was only a small fraction of our band too. Well, most of the drummers, but we were low on pipers as per usual.

You should definitely reread ANNA and LOLA again pre-ISLA. They're the perfect reads for right now while we're doing RSW and the myriad summer things that take up all of our time. Definitely some of the best contemporary that is out there, in my opinion. And not rife with issues, which as you know, is not really my thing.

Todd and I are having a lot of fun, though it's definitely making it hard to get my butt in the chair. Let me know when you'd like to Skype next, because I could really use the accountability. Only if it works for you, of course! :D

  6. I LOVE THE HIGHLAND GAMES PICTURE! How fun! Did you have a blast?
I haven't read any Stephanie Perkins books but these sound intriguing, might have to give it a try!
As for your writing, don't stress, you clearly had a good excuse, and so what if things slipped a little, plenty of time to catch up this week :) Have a great week!

    1. Thanks, Samantha! Canada Day was more fun than the Highland Games, but it's still a blast to be surrounded by folks in kilts and the sound of bagpipes. :-)

If you like fun YA contemporary, you should definitely give Stephanie Perkins' books a try. They top a lot of YA fans' lists, because they're so good! They're quick reads that totally suck you in, which is kind of perfect for the summer, don't you think? I'm hoping that since my husband has been home for a little bit, I'll naturally fall back into some of my routines, like writing. Hope so! Have a wonderful week! :D

  7. Oh my gosh, what a beautiful photo! Jazz hands ahoy! Happy Fellow Commonwealther Day, by the way - I hope it was appropriately maple leafy and moosey :D

Ooh, I adore Stephanie Perkins' books. I cannot WAIT for Isla, I might have to take a leaf from your book and reread Anna and Lola first <3 Have a wonderful week, Jaime! :)

    1. Haha! Thanks, Caitie! Canada Days was definitely appropriately maple leafy and moosey lol. :D Love that!

I'm so, so eager for ISLA now after rereading ANNA and getting into LOLA again. I love these books so much! ISLA comes out while I'm in Europe, so I'll have to get my grabby hands on it somehow. Thank goodness for Kindle! Hope you're having a wonderful week! :D

  8. Sounds like a fun week! Awesome picture.

I haven't read any Stephanie Perkins books as contemporary's not usually my thing, but maybe I should give it a go, seeing as I've heard so many great things!

    1. It really was a fun week. Especially Canada Day! :D
You know, I never really used to read much contemporary, but I'd say that Stephanie Perkins' books were kind of like a gateway drug lol. Now I read a little more widely, though sci-fi and fantasy will probably always be my favourite. You should definitely check them out! Have a great week, Emma! :D

  9. So much great stuff! I love Stephanie Perkins and now I've got to read some more. Adding it to my list immediately. You look awesome in your Scottish attire. I also adore snare drums and shivs, so it sounds like you had a great week, performance anxiety notwithstanding. Have another great one!

    1. I'm loving Stephanie Perkins' books all over again. It's definitely getting me pumped for ISLA's release in August. Can't wait! As much as my band attire makes me look and feel about 50lbs heavier, I really do love it. I had tons of fun playing this week, so that was kind of a rush. Hope you have a wonderful week, Melanie! :D

  10. Oh my gosh, I LOVE your pipe and drum outfit! Glad so see you didn't let the performance anxiety get the best of you on Canada Day. :)

    Have a great week, Jaime!

    1. Thanks, Susan! It makes me look and feel heftier than I'd like, but I still kind of love it. That said, it's ridiculously warm on a hot summer day! I had so much fun playing in the parade yesterday, so that was kind of a rush.

Hope you have a great week, too! :D

    1. It took me forever to figure out marching and playing, and I'm still not there 100%. I've got the marching part down, to the point that I no longer have to think about it, but the playing thing is tricky while marching. I'm getting better though! :D

  15. I loved Anna and the French Kiss. Really pleasantly surprised by it because it's my usual type of book. But I was hooked. And I definitely need to pick up Lola at some point.

    1. I think ANNA was like a gateway drug for me lol. I don't recall reading much YA contemporary before picking it up, and now I read WAY more in that genre. You should definitely read LOLA because it's pretty great too! :D

  16. You chickened out??? :) But you look great in that outfit and the jazz hands just give it that extra needed touch! I have some books I want to revisit. I'm going to have to check out Anna and the French Kiss. Haven't read it yet.

    1. I totally chickened out. I was in the middle of the field, drum strapped to my body, and just got that awful sinking feeling in my stomach better known as the whole flight part of the fight or flight equation. Yeah, I flew out of there post-haste lol. But I made up for it by playing in the Canada Day parade, so I don't feel too horribly about it. ;-) You definitely need to check out ANNA. Such a great book! :D

  18. Anna and the French Kiss was a fantastic book...I still have not read Lola and the Boy Next Door, though! I am planning on reading it this fall, and then I'll have to read the new one, too. And Happy Canada Day!

    1. It *was* a fantastic book! LOLA is just as good, if not better in many respects. Cricket Bell is one of the best book boyfriends out there. Though, Étienne St. Clair is pretty darn great too! I'm sure you'll love it. Happy belated Canada Day to you too! :-)

  19. I've wanted to do a reread of Anna and Lola for a long time now but never had the time to. One of these days...
When I was in Utah last weekend, I noticed that B&N's YA section WAS separated into genres. It totally threw me actually. I like how Chapters/Indigo doesn't do that.

  20. Happy belated Canada Day! My brother and his family are visiting from Vancouver and his wife seemed really impressed that I knew it was Canada Day. LOL Hope the rest of your week goes well!

  21. Yea marching band! At times I miss it so much, but I'm not sure I could still carry the tuba for the entire parade route. And I'm jealous of the outfit. How can you wear that and NOT feel cool?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Happy Canada Day!! And can I just say, that pic of you in full regalia is Adorable! (jazz hands...hahaha!) :)

And you kicked ass at the drumming! Seriously, now I want to beg you for mp3 drum samples to use in my song mixes. Maybe I could bribe you with chocolate and/or books. :) How fun to take part in that, but man wool socks in the heat of summer. You're lucky you didn't lose 10 pounds in sweat alone.

And yay for Todd being home! Hope you guys have an amazing week! :)

  23. We talked about it on Instagram, but I just read ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS and now can't see why I waited so long to read Stephanie Perkins! She's wonderful! Looking forward to reading LOLA soon and getting my hands on ISLA in August! :) Have a great week Jaime!

  24. Happy Canada Day! And what's a celebration without jazz hands?! That's awesome. :) I hate to say it but I've never read Anna and the French Kiss. I've heard so many good things about it! Hopefully I'll get to it... someday. Have a great week, Jaime!

  25. Yay! I'm so glad you shared a pic of you in uniform. You're adorable! I'm glad you got to play in the parade. Marching & playing is hard, but you'll get better at it. Don't worry! :) Hope you have a great week!
