WHAT I'M READING

I just finished up The Impossible Lives of Greta Wells, an adult read for the book club I take part in. As I suspected, it was only meh. It felt like someone trying way too hard to be deep, which I really kind of dislike. On a more positive note, I started reading Melissa Landers' Alienated and I can't wait to devour it. I may read the occasional adult book, but I always come back to YA.

WHAT I'M WRITING

Nothing this week, but that's because my husband was home for a handful of days and because the Olympics were wrapping up. I fully anticipate getting back to writing this week now that I have more time on my hands and less cheering on my country to do. While hubby was home, I bounced revision ideas off him and received valuable input in return. Talking it out is always the most helpful thing for me.

WHAT INSPIRES ME RIGHT NOW

A little bit of this, a little bit of that. The fact that it's almost March is inspiring, because it means that spring is just that much closer. {You know, despite the fact that we woke up to -32C (-25F) temperature this morning and it's supposed to be like this for the foreseeable future. Ew.} It also inspires me that I have nothing major on my plate for the next little while, meaning I'll have more time to get some writing done. I've been having the worst time getting into a routine, so this gives me time to sort that out.

WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO

Olympics: I'm sure I drove the people in my Twitter feed a bit nuts this weekend will all of my Olympics-related cheering. {I'm not even a little bit sorry about that.} Canada won GOLD in men's + women's curling as well as men's + women's hockey. My favourite part of the whole Games had to be that nail-biter of a gold medal women's hockey game! It was pretty fun to see Team Canada march in for the closing ceremonies wearing the same sweater I was wearing at the time. {A Christmas gift from my husband.} We wrapped up the final day with what I'm calling a Gold Medal Canadian lunch: poutine, coffee and a maple donut from Tim Horton's, as well as Molson Canadian and Granville Island Maple Cream Ale. Sooooo not healthy, but we didn't care.

Team Canada Sochi 2014 sweater and our Gold Medal Canadian lunch {cardiac arrest waiting to happen}.

Harry Potter Exhibition: We drove an hour north to Edmonton to check out the Harry Potter Exhibition at the Telus World of Science. It's basically a travelling collection of props and costumes from the movie. This was one of the final weekends it was showing, and being the twits that we are, we headed up on a Saturday. The wait to get in was four hours long, and once we were in, I hate to say it, but I was a bit underwhelmed by it all. I know, I know. Sad but true. The gift shop was full of overpriced, poor quality merchandise {with the exception of the wands and Marauder's maps}. I might have been tempted to buy a Ravenclaw scarf, but for some bizarro reason they were sold out of that house alone. In the end, I'm glad we went because I would have felt like I missed out on something otherwise.

Pipe & Drum Band: I finally got my kit! That's pipe band speak for the uniform we wear to play in. This is a big milestone. Too bad it makes me look like I weigh twice as much and have a bad case of cankles lol. Now all I need is a flask full of some kind of adult beverage to hide in my sporran. ;-)

All in all, it was a pretty good week all around, especially having my husband home. I'm looking forward to another great week!

WHAT I'M READING
As I'm typing up and scheduling this post, I'm exactly 25 pages from the end of Cress. I know, I know. Why didn't I just finish the thing first? I guess I'm a sucker for punishment or something. Such a good book, but that was not at all a surprise. After this, I'll be moving on to Rebecca Behrens' When Audrey Met Alice, which arrived in the mail this week and made me grin like a bit of a fool. I had the privilege of meeting Rebecca a year ago at the SCBWI conference in New York, and she's as wonderful as I fully anticipate this book is going to be.

WHAT I'M WRITING

Thanks to a flood of completely WiP-altering ideas and a super constructive Skype chat with my sister, I've begun tackling a revision of that erstwhile dead-in-the-water story I yammered on about a few weeks back.* I think sometimes the decision to let something go is exactly what's needed to breathe life back into it. Who knew? Needless to say, I'm thrilled at all the possibilities.

WHAT INSPIRES ME RIGHT NOW
{see above}

WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO
Watching Olympics, jotting down revision ideas as they pop into my head {which, thankfully, is a lot these days}, binge-watching Netflix shows {Damages, Archer, and World Without End}, attending a Valentine's ceilidh, babysitting, eating half a container of green apple Tic Tacs in one sitting {but they were so darn tasty}, and receiving fun stuff in the mail {an HBC duffle coat as seen on Team Canada's Olympians at the opening ceremonies of the 2014 Winter Games and some fun writer socks from ModCloth}.

Too bad we're having surprisingly nice weather again, making it a bit warm to actually wear the coat right now.

SO, WHAT'S NEW WITH YOU, FRIENDS?

* My opinion hasn't changed about similarities between books, but fortunately I've come up with a bunch of really solid ideas to differentiate my story from OTHER STORY.

WHAT I'M READING

I haven't been getting in as much reading time as I would like lately, but I did finish The Burning Sky, which I got totally sucked into and now I'm a handful of chapters into Cress. Honestly, all I want is a big block of time to sit down and devour this book.

WHAT I'M WRITING
Nothing, unfortunately. I did a lot of thinking about my WiPs this week and talking it all over with my husband, but other than that I really didn't get in any brainstorming or anything else really. Such is life, right? I blame barfing for two days straight and watching the Olympics for the lack of time and focus. And, of course, having my husband home finally after three weeks away.

I love Team Canada's Olympic gear.
It looks great and doesn't cost $500.
#GoCanadaGo #WeAreWinter
WHAT INSPIRES ME RIGHT NOW
Excellence in sport. The way people from around the world come together and put aside our differences to cheer on our amazingly skilled and talented athletes. I honestly cannot get enough of the Winter Olympics. It helps that Canada is doing really well right now too! I also love hearing all the stories about athletes overcoming huge adversity--injury, lack of funding, personal hardship--in order to compete at the Games. So unbelievably inspiring!

WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO

Watching all of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics I can possibly squeeze in. I will always love the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics above all, but I thought Sochi put on a great (albeit rosier than reality) show at their opening ceremonies. Ballet! Tolstoy! Good stuff.

Fighting off a migraine that knocked me flat and made me puke for two straight days. Ugh.

Babysitting, playing on my brand new Andante snare drum for band practice (it's amazing), going on dinner dates with my hubby (we saw the Lego movie the other night too), and staying in out of the -35C (-31F) wind chill. Basically, aside from the days spent barfing, the complete lack of writing, and the chilly weather, everything is awesome.

WHAT I'M READING

I started reading The Burning Sky, a YA fantasy by Sherry Thomas. I'm having a bit of a tough time getting into it (the world-building is a bit...odd and confusing), but I feel confident that it will probably suck me in soon enough. I do have to say that I'm tempted to set it aside for a bit to devour my copy of Cress that showed up yesterday. I've been waiting for that one FOREVER.

WHAT I'M WRITING

I actually wrote somewhere in the neighbourhood of 600 words the other day, which I had said I wasn't going to do until I have this thing all completely brainstormed, plotted, and planned. I have been doing a bunch of all three (which has been lots of fun), but then I had an idea for a scene and wanted to type it out before I forgot it. It's wonderful to feel excited about writing again.

WHAT INSPIRES ME RIGHT NOW
Susan Dennard's recent Pub(lishing) Crawl post, Increase Your Writing Productivity: The Productivity Pyramid. I used to be so disciplined about my writing. I had a routine that I stuck to pretty well every day. But then I started to stray from The Routine* and eventually that led to straying from writing. It has been ROUGH getting back into a writing routine again. Susan's Productivity Pyramid feels like a fantastic place to start to get back on track.

WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO
Nothing worthy of flashing lights and fanfare, but I did fiddle around with my blog design which was fun. The blue morpho butterfly in the header is a nod to the manuscript I kind of sort of (Maybe? Still not sure.) shelved last week. (Ideas to fix it are still trickling in, so...???)

And I've been binge-watching Merlin on Netflix, which I'm actually enjoying quite a bit. It's not without its cheesy moments and laughably bad CGI, but there have also been some really, really good episodes. I'm about to start the fifth and final season, and I'm sort of bummed that I'm almost done with it. It's been wonderfully inspiring for the YA fantasy I'm in the middle of planning.
