What's Up Wednesday

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly blog hop created by me and my sister, Erin Funk, to help writers connect. With that aim in mind, we would like to encourage participants to swing by other WUW blog posts, get to know other writers taking part, and spread some writerly encouragement around. Before you go, make sure to leave a link to your post in the widget at the end of this post. Also, please remember to link back to the host blogs and/or use one of the fancy schmancy WUW buttons provided. We'd really appreciate it! For those of you who are new to WUW, these are the headings we have been using:

WHAT I'M READING
WHAT I'M WRITING (+ WRITING GOAL)

WHAT WORKS FOR ME
WHAT ELSE IS NEW

*We have three new Winter 2015 buttons under the What's Up Wednesday tab above!*
WHAT I'M READING
I am still reading THIS SHATTERED WORLD. Still. And I'm not all that far into it. I need a reading day big time. I'm also partway into NORTHANGER ABBEY and already loving it. Jane Austen has such a fun sense of humour and it shines here. I've been doing some WWI WiP research as well, and I'm finding VIMY by Pierre Berton to be most helpful in this process.*

* Weirdest combo of books ever.

WHAT I'M WRITING
Not nearly enough. I didn't meet my drafting goal, and I'll leave it at that. Did some research and did some outline bulking.
Writing goal for the week → Continue to bulk up my outline, research Vimy Ridge, and actually get some writing done.

WHAT WORKS FOR ME
1) When writer friends share their awesome news  Tracey Neithercott got an agent this week! Seeing other writers realize their goals is a motivator for me. It makes me want to finish something already and maybe, just maybe, find a home for it.

2) A post by Chuck Wendig  Arting Hard Like An Artful MoFo*: 25 Ways to Be a Bad-Ass Maker Who Makes Bad-Ass Stuff. Great article as usual, but fair warning in his own words, "he uses lots of naughty language. NSFW. Probably NSFL." Read it!
* Title tweak is my doing in order to keep my blog SFW. ;-)

WHAT ELSE IS NEW
My week in cartoony turd emojis and a frilly border.

This week has been a wee bit trying, not gonna lie. At the risk of being all TMI, I'll just say I'm taking meds that have all kinds of (lame) side effects and these side effects are causing all kinds of anxiety, which means more (lame) meds. Fun. Hard to accomplish much of anything when you're fretting and feeling like your own body can't stand you.

But enough about all that. Bleh.

This past Saturday, my pipe band hosted our annual Robbie Burns Dinner in honour of Scotland's national poet. It's always a fun-filled night of poetry, pipes and drums, Highland dancing, and other Scottish goodness. We feasted on haggis, neeps, and tatties, and the pipe band played the best it has in a long time. I was supposed to emcee but I totally chickened out. :P

I've been puttering away at knitting with the aim of opening my own Etsy shop.* You know, just in time for spring. Haha!
Not the best timing considering people aren't exactly thinking about purchasing knit goods when the weather gets nicer, but it's still something I'm going to pursue. Because let's face it: Winter Is Always Coming (at some point down the road).
The plan is to make knit goods with a literary theme and to donate a portion of the proceeds to literacy campaigns!

* Hee! Not open just yet. Soon, though. ;-)

Well, that's it for my week.
WHAT'S NEW WITH YOU?

  1. Boo to not feeling well. Hope the meds sort themselves out soon so you feel better.

I'm having a reading go-slow, too. That's just the way it goes sometimes.

Good luck with the outlining and have a great week, Jaime ^_^

    1. Well, I should hopefully not be on them for very long, so the end might be in sight. Fingers crossed!
I really hope the reading picks up soon too. For both of us. I love getting lost in a good book, so it's a bit frustrating to be kind of 'meh' about reading lately. I'd probably feel better about it if I was pouring that time into writing, but alas, I am not. :-/ Ah well. Have a wonderful week, Cole!

  2. Good luck with your goal this week. I too am having struggles with writing, it kind of all happened around Thanksgiving though. Those are still the holidays, Thanks for sharing and good luck with your outline.

    1. Thank you! I've been derailed for so long now, it's hard to pinpoint the exact moment when things went off the tracks. I've been working at getting back into writing, but it is slow going, that's for sure. Hope we both figure it out soon! :D

  3. Oh dear! I hope you're feeling better soon; there's nothing worse than when you're feeling under the weather. :\

Your etsy shop sounds wonderful! I hope you let us all know when it's up and running, because I can't think of anything better than literary knitwear. ;)

    Have a great week!

    1. Thanks, Jess! Hope so too!
I can't wait to get this shop up and running. It will be tricky to make sure that everything steers clear of copyright violation, but I think I'm up to the challenge. Should be fun! :D Have a wonderful week!

  4. I'm sorry you aren't feeling well. Plus anxiety. That truly stinks. I hope it all settles down this week. In the meantime, I love that idea for an etsy store. It's an awesome name, and I would buy stuff there. Even in the summer. :) I hope you have a much better week!

    1. Everything always feels worse when anxiety comes into play. I hope it settles down too because it's really dragging me down. :-/ I'll just have to get knitting away so I can finally open up that Etsy shop. I'm pretty excited about it. Have a wonderful week, Melanie! :D

  7. I LOVED This Shattered World. I have the Audilbe version (which is amazing) and I finished it over the weekend.
I hope you feel better. Oh, and on the knitting shop, I think its a wonderful idea and spring is a perfect time to start it. I picture a spring collection of brightly colored market bags and lacy cardigan's (perfect for layering over sundresses that you wouldn't otherwise be able to wear for a couple of months) when I think of spring knitting :)

    1. I've just been having the worst time getting into THIS SHATTERED WORLD, and I don't think it's the book's fault. I keep picking it up and reading a handful of pages at a time, and that's no way to read a book. I think if I sat down and read a big chunk, I'd probably get sucked in. Maybe today will be the day? Can't wait to open up this Etsy shop. I have SO many ideas for it, including spring/summer knitting stuff. Should be all kinds of fun. Have a great week, Sarah! :D

  9. Hope you feel better, but so exciting about your etsy shop. I also wanted to say I loved THIS SHATTERED WORLD and hope you make some progress soon. I found it a little slow but it sped up the more you got into it.

    1. Thanks, Rachel! I think there is an end in sight with these meds. Hope so, anyway. I'm super excited about the Etsy shop myself. It will be tricky to steer clear of copyright violation (for non-public domain stuff), but I think I'm up to the challenge. I guess I figure it's great advertising for the books I love too! I'm about 1/3 of the way into THIS SHATTERED WORLD and it's starting to pick up now. I've been picking it up and reading only a handful of pages at a time, and that's not the best way to read a book. Hoping to really dive in today. Have a wonderful week, Rachel! :D

  10. Ugh... Sorry you haven't been feeling well. I've been on a lot of weird meds lately too, and the side effects are almost worse than the issues they're supposed to fix. Anyway, I feel your pain. Well, not literally, but you know. ;-) Hope you're feeling better very soon! Oh, and I feel you on THIS SHATTERED WORLD being a bit of a slow start. It took me until about the 1/3 mark to become truly invested, but once I did, I couldn't put if down. Hope you end up loving it. Best of luck with your writing goals this week, Jaime!

    1. With any luck, I won't have to be on these meds for long, so hopefully there is a light at the end of the crappy side effects tunnel. Hope the same goes for you as well! I'm about 1/3 of the way into THIS SHATTERED WORLD and I can feel it starting to pick up, which is a relief. I have been picking it up and only reading a handful of pages at a time, so it's partly my fault. I'm hoping to really dive in today. There are so many other awesome books I want to read! Have a great week, Katy! :D

  11. Glad to see others liked This Shattered World too, I just love that series! Especially the space parts! Meds are no fun... so hard to stay productive on meds. Hope you feel better soon and I love that *weirdest combo of books ever. I'm currently in a weird combo too with a YA contemp, a classic (Uncle Tom's Cabin), a Laura Ingalls book with my girls, and a book about Alaska for research!

    1. I'm only about 1/3 of the way into THIS SHATTERED WORLD and things are finally starting to pick up, so I fully anticipate getting sucked in. Hope so, anyway! You're so right about meds and productivity. It would be fine if there were minimal or zero side effects, but alas, that is not the case. Ah well. I honestly think the only reason I can read multiple books like this is that they're so dramatically different from one another. Otherwise, it would be too big of a challenge lol. Have a great week, Margo! :D

  16. Boo for nasty side effects! I hope you are feeling better. (Though your choice of emoticons made me snort laugh in a very dignified fashion)

Hooray for your soon-to-be Etsy shop! And don't worry about launching in the Spring, you'll just be boosting your traffic so that you're ready to go by Winter. Plus, you could offer some of your gorgeous patterns as instant downloads so that other knitters could be working on projects for next winter. If you ever need advice and/or comraderie regarding all things Etsy, you know where I am. *grin*

Hope you have a much, much better week! :)

    1. Thanks, Kris! Those poop emojis always crack (oh ho ho) me up. I use them way too frequently lol.
I'm pretty excited about the Etsy shop. There are lots of spring/summer knitting patterns too, so I can do stuff like that while building up my fall/winter stock. Either way, it will be fun doing all this knitting. I'll definitely pick your brain when I have questions about Etsy. Thanks!
Have a wonderful week, Kris! :D

  18. I've been really slow with reading lately too. If I'm lucky I'll read three books this month and that's really low for me. Oh well.
Your Robbie Burns night sounds like lots of fun!

  21. I'm so sorry you've been having a bleh week - I hope it gets better soon, but OMG I love the Etsy link!!! And of course I love that you're going to open your own, but that link had me (and my 15 yo) rolling. (haha - rick rolling - get it, get it...okay, I'll stop). I may have to send you the rick rolling part of my story. I kind of love that it's making its rounds again. :)

  22. I hear you on needing a reading day. Last night, I was craving some pretty prose, so I started reading BLUE LILY, LILY BLUE. Problem is, I'm already reading two books and don't even have time to read one. Duh.

We have a whole stack of Pierre Burton's historical fiction books for school, but we've only read the one on Sir Isaac Brock so far. Liam enjoyed it though, so we might have to tackle the others some time. Hope his Vimy book is helping your story. Keep plugging away at the research and outlining. Bear in mind that I went into my current WIP with a 45k outline (overkill much?), so yeah, you can probably justify spending more time on that before jumping into heavy drafting.

You're going to think I'm a total tool, but I remembered the Rick roll about half a second before I clicked on the Etsy shop link. Liam laughed his butt off at me. Anyway, hope you're feeling much better soon and that your meds give you a break! Wishing you a week that requires no poo emojis! :)

I just had to "steal" the What's Up Wednesday link you used this week. I saw it on your post and had to have it for my own!
