What's Up Wednesday

What's Up Wednesday is a blog hop created by me and my sister, Erin Funk, to help writers connect. With that aim in mind, we would like to encourage participants to swing by other WUW blog posts, get to know other writers taking part, and spread some writerly encouragement around. Before you go, make sure to leave a link to your post in the widget at the end of this post. Also, please remember to link back to the host blogs and/or use one of the fancy schmancy WUW buttons provided. We'd really appreciate it! For those of you who are new to WUW, these are the headings we have been using:

WHAT I'M READING
WHAT I'M WRITING (+ WRITING GOAL)

WHAT WORKS FOR ME
WHAT ELSE IS NEW

*We have three new Winter 2015 buttons under the WUW tab above!*
WHAT I'M READING
Finally finished THIS SHATTERED WORLD, which was good but not as great as THESE BROKEN STARS, in my opinion. I found it a bit tough to get into and wasn't completely gripped by the story or the characters. I also continued reading NORTHANGER ABBEY for my Chapter a Day Classic and read POINTE by Brandy Colbert. I just finished this one yesterday and I'm not sure what I think of it. I'm looking forward to starting BURN FOR BURN by Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian next.

WHAT I'M WRITING
This was a crummy week for writing...until yesterday when I managed to write over 1000 words in one sitting. It's not a lot, but for me it sure feels like it. I've been struggling to make any headway on my WiP, EVERY SAD & LOVELY THING, so I'm hoping this is the first step toward much more progress. Writing goal for the week → see next category for details

WHAT WORKS FOR ME
Jumping in on #WriterRecharge for the month of February seems to be doing the trick. (You can see my goal-setting post here and find further details about this writing "jump start" here.) Speaking specifically about writing, I set a goal of adding 5000 new words to my current WiP. With only one day under my belt, I'm already on my way to reaching it. My overall writing goal for the month is to get 1/3 to 1/2 of my WiP drafted. This should be doable with a little effort and a good deal less laziness on my part. And it's about time.

WHAT ELSE IS NEW
Not much, to be honest. I have been watching too much Grey's Anatomy (not helping the anxiety situation), hanging out with the hubs, I went to Book Club last Friday night, I babysat my friend's super cute two-month-old, and that's about it.

Oh, what an exciting life I lead.

But mostly I'm just excited that I'm writing again. Finally.

Well, that's it for my week.
WHAT'S NEW WITH YOU?

  2. Well done on those 1,000 words! :) Progress is progress, no matter how small (though over 1,000 words in one sitting is certainly great progress as far as I'm concerned!) and I hope February turns out to be a brilliant writing month for you! Have a great week! :D

  4. It sounds like a lovely life. A little quiet never hurt anyone! I still plan to get involved with Writer's Recharge. Maybe I'll get that post up later today. Great job writing! Now keep it up, and have a great week!

    1. Definitely don't mind quiet. Though, when WUW rolls around, I look back on the week and think, "Hmm. I watched an awful lot of Netflix and didn't do a whole lot else. Oops!" LOL You should totally jump in on Writer Recharge. I think it's going to be great! Have a wonderful week, Melanie! :D

  7. I keep hearing good things about BURN BURN BURN you'll have to let us know if you like it! My writing week has been pretty quite too, but sometimes that's how it goes. 1000 words is awesome though!

    1. I've had BURN FOR BURN and FIRE WITH FIRE on my shelf for ages now, so I really needed to get around to reading them. I'm really hoping that the 1250 words I ended up writing leads to many, many more words. Hope you have a great week! :D

  9. Congrats on writing again. I know after a break it always feels good to get back into it, especially when it's been a struggle (I've been through this before).
I've had Pointe on my TBR for awhile- I love ballet books.

    1. Thanks, Melanie! I really hope Writer Recharge is the thing that helps me get back on track. I have a good feeling about it. :-) As for POINTE, it was a lot edgier/grittier than I prefer, to be honest. I had a really hard time connecting to the main character in any kind of way, which always makes it tough to keep on reading. Others loved it, though, so it could just be me.

Have a wonderful week, Melanie! :D

  11. Finally, a book in someone's "What I'm Reading" list I have read! Well, two, counting Northanger Abbey, but I mean POINTE. I also didn't quite know what to think of it after finishing, and while I like dark YA and want to encourage the genre, POINTE fell a little flat to me on all points. Heh. I never felt too much sympathy for the narrator, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I felt like I was meant to feel sympathy or empathy with the narrator, and I never did...

Also, I read your Writers Recharge post from earlier this week and I didn't know about it! It sounds fantastic, and I look forward to more updates from you on that front.

    1. I really have to agree with you about POINTE. I think I expected some edginess, but not quite *that* much. I could not connect with the MC in any kind of way no matter how hard I tried, so it was a tough read for me. I feel like a jerk for saying this, but it almost felt like the author was trying too hard to make it edgy/gritty/dark, which was a bit distracting for me. I guess it just isn't for everyone, right?

I'm really looking forward to being part of Writer Recharge this month. It's been a struggle to accomplish anything, so this could be the thing that helps me get back on track. Hope so! Have a wonderful week, Bailey! :D

  13. Oh my gosh, I LOVE the title of you WIP! If you ever need a beta reader...cough cough...ha! ;) Yay for 1,000 words, and sounds like you've been reading some great books as well! I haven't read These Broken Stars yet, but I'm kinda dying to.

    1. Thanks, Cortney! It's a line from a WWI poem, so it felt *very* fitting given that my story is set partially in WWI. I will definitely remember you when it comes time for beta readers! (Thanks for offering!) So the word count for the day ended up being 1250, which I'm pretty happy about. Here's hoping that spawns more words. Have a wonderful week! :D

  14. Yay for 1000 words!
For some reason I actually loved This Shattered World even more than These Broken Stars. I loved Jubilee's character transformation and the way the story included Tarver and Lilac. Both books are AMAZING :)

    1. Thanks, Sarah! It ended up being 1250 words, so I'm super happy about that. :-)
With THESE BROKEN STARS, I think it fell victim to Wrong Book Right Now syndrome. I probably should have set it aside when I started to sense that I wasn't in the mood for it, you know? I liked it, for sure, but maybe not as much as I would have another time. I think I just preferred Tarver and Lilac to Flynn and Jubilee as characters. Plus, I had a *really* hard time not picturing Flynn like Justin Timberlake circa 1998 with the super blond, curly ramen noodle hair. LOL Definitely looking forward to Book 3, THEIR FRACTURED LIGHT.
      Have a wonderful week! :D

  15. I haven't even ordered a copy of THIS SHATTERED WORLD yet even though I was chomping at the bit to read it. I have to say, I'm a little less eager after hearing some of your thoughts on it. I'm interested to know what you think about BURN FOR BURN too. I thought it was all right but wasn't blown away by it. I'm not sure if I'll ever get to the sequel. We'll see, I guess.

I'm glad you had a word count breakthrough this week! I hope Writer Recharge helps you build up some momentum. Sometimes it just takes a while until a story starts to click. If things weren't in a major state of upheaval around here, I'd have been tempted to hop on board with that too.

Hope you have a great week! We'll have to sneak in a Skype session sometime soon! :)

    1. Like I said to Sarah just above, I think it's very likely that THIS SHATTERED WORLD fell victim to the whole wrong-book-right-now thing. The whole time I was reading it, I kept thinking I should set it aside and pick it up again when I was in the right mood for it. That happens to me way too often. I think you'll like it, though. Right now I'm just happy to start reading something that isn't so involved.

So I'm sitting here trying to actually do some writing and my attention span is probably about two seconds long. Bleh. Nothing like following up a productive day with a completely unproductive one. I'm not giving up, though. Still going to aim for some wordage this afternoon. I really don't want to leave the remaining 3800 words I need to write this week until the very end.

Just let me know whenever you need a Skype break. It doesn't have to be super long either. Have a great week! :D

  17. I hate to tell you that you're wrong, but you're wrong. :P 1000 words is a lot of words. It doesn't feel like it when you hear all the people talk about how many words they write in a day. I know you can write more, but you are doing well right now. Relax and know you are doing a good job.

    1. Thanks, Dani! The grand total for the day ended up being 1250, so I'm pretty happy with that. Now if only I could get into some kind of writing routine, I'd be thrilled. Hope you're having a wonderful week! :D

  19. I've been eying up BURN FOR BURN for ages (heard so many good things about Jenny Han's books!) so I'll be interested in seeing what you think of it.
Sorry to hear you've hit a bit of a wall with writing, but 1000 words is epic! Hopefully this is the start or an awesome week for you :)

  20. 1000 words in a sitting sounds like a ton to me! :) I think the Writer Recharge is going to be awesome for both our word counts! Except I have to get myself in gear and actually get signed up. Yikes! Have a great week, Jaime!
