What's Up Wednesday

What's Up Wednesday is a blog hop created by me and my sister, Erin Funk, to help writers connect. With that aim in mind, we would like to encourage participants to swing by other WUW blog posts, get to know other writers taking part, and spread some writerly encouragement around. Before you go, make sure to leave a link to your post in the widget at the end of this post. Also, please remember to link back to the host blogs and/or use one of the fancy schmancy WUW buttons provided. We'd really appreciate it! For those of you who are new to WUW, these are the headings we have been using:

WHAT I'M READING
WHAT I'M WRITING (+ WRITING GOAL)

WHAT WORKS FOR ME
WHAT ELSE IS NEW

*You can grab one of our Winter 2015 buttons under the WUW tab above!*
WHAT I'M READING
(Book titles are linked to Goodreads)
Well, I finished both FIRE WITH FIRE and ASHES TO ASHES by Jenny Han & Siobhan Vivian this week. The books in this series were well-written and unputdownable--especially FWF--and I just really needed to know how everything wrapped up. I have capital T thoughts on the ending, but I won't spoil anything here.* Next, I'm going to start I'LL MEET YOU THERE by Heather Demetrios, which I've heard only great things about. I'm still rereading Kerstin Gier's RUBY RED as well.

* I did post my thoughts on Goodreads. (HERE) Note: they are hidden due to series-wide spoilers, so proceed with caution.

WHAT I'M WRITING
Still making good on my #WriterRecharge goals, meeting and/or surpassing them two weeks in a row. Since the beginning of February, I have added 11,500+ new words to my WiP, so I'm pretty happy with that. I'm hoping to meet my Week 3 goal of 6000 words. We'll see how it goes, but I can say for certain that taking part in Writer Recharge is giving me a boost.
Writing goal for the week → Add another 6000+ new words to EVERY SAD & LOVELY THING

WHAT WORKS FOR ME
Not wanting to be a poser.
Not even kidding. Prior to Writer Recharge, so many weeks of What's Up Wednesday went by with me talking about how I was doing little to no writing, making excuses, feeling sorry for myself, feeling like a giant fraud. Writers write...and I wasn't writing. I think Writer Recharge came along at a good time, because suddenly I'm setting challenging goals for myself and I'm actually meeting them for the first time in a long time. Between WR and WUW, I just really don't want to look like a poser by reporting excuses and failures week in and week out. I really hope I can keep this up in the coming days/weeks.

WHAT ELSE IS NEW
• I played with my pipe band at a Valentine's Ceilidh this past Saturday. I didn't want to go, but it ended up being fun!
• I started watching Parenthood again on Netflix. I like it, but have to admit many of the Bravermans drive me bonkers.
• I'm kitty-sitting for my parents, so between my cats and theirs it's a zoo around here. Can't wait to have my house back.
• I am eagerly awaiting my new Erin Condren planner and a bunch of stickers and doodads. I ♥ being organized so much!

Katniss being a cutie; ready for the Valentine's Ceilidh; mind-boggled by this book; I've been Tumbling(?) a lot; tasty butter tarts.

Well, that was my week, folks.
WHAT'S NEW WITH YOU?

    1. It really is exactly what I need right now. I hope I can keep all of this productivity up once it's done! The butter tarts were tasty, though they would have been much tastier with raisins in them. (I was out, unfortunately.) And even better with homemade pastry. (I was lazy.) Have an awesome week, Cole! :D

  2. Congrats on all those new words! :D It sounds like you're making fantastic progress with your WIP; it's great to hear that Writer Recharge is working for you. Best of luck with this week's writing goal!

I know exactly what you mean. Lately I've been feeling like a fraud because I call myself a writer but I've been in a bit of a creative slump for the majority of February. It's certainly motivating me to get my butt into gear, though!

    Have a great week!

    1. Thanks! A couple days into this week and I'm definitely struggling with motivation to get words down, so hopefully I'm able to meet this week's goal. Just need to buckle down and stop whining, I guess. Hope you're able to shake the creative slump. I know all too well what that feels like. I feel like I lived there for months and months. Hope the motivation finds both of us this week! :D

  3. You are seriously kicking wordcount butt. So inspiring! :) I need to make like you and get my butt in chair. I totally understand the feeling like a poser thing, gah!

Anyway, hope the zoo calms down soon, and yay that you enjoyed your Valentine's gig!

    1. I've had two great weeks, but not gonna lie, I'm really struggling with motivation and inspiration this week. Bleh. Just have to power through it, I guess. Hope you have a great week, Alice! :D

  4. Wow - so impressed with your word count! I'm glad WR is working! :-)

I LOVED Parenthood... but I 100% get the bonkers-making. It's great to watch, but I am SO GLAD I'm not related (for the most part) to people like that.

    Have a great week!

    1. Thanks! Writer Recharge is definitely working. Not sure what I'll do when it's done!
As for Parenthood, there are many things that I love about it, but a handful of things--Zeek (ughhhh), mouthy/spoiled/bratty kids, and everyone talking over each other all the time--are definite drawbacks. Even so, I want to see the whole series through, so I'm willing to ignore that stuff.
Have a great week, Sarah! :D

I bought I'LL MEET YOU THERE recently and can't wait to read it. Hope you enjoy the book!

I've heard such great things about I'LL MEET YOU THERE, so I'm hoping it lives up to the hype. Have a great week! :D

  6. Way to go with your writing! I'm headed out for a vacation getaway this weekend, just the hubs & me, and he has to work for 80% of that time, so I'm taking it as a writing retreat. Will it work? I sure hope so. There's just SO much going on around here with kids and the pregnancy... Crazy stuff.

    1. Thanks! WR has been working really well for me, so I hope I can keep all of this up once it's done. I've been struggling with motivation so far this week. Need to give myself a kick in the butt and get going already!

The butter tarts were yummy, but would have been better with raisins (I was out) and with homemade pastry (I was lazy). Have a great week, Mere! :D

  10. Just stopping by; did not do a post myself this week. I definitely get the ebb and flow of writing goals. It's hard to sustain momentum all the time. 11k this month is great! What are you working on?

    1. Hey, Stephanie! Thanks for popping by. :-)
It really is tough maintaining that momentum. I'm struggling this week, which is a bit of a bummer given the past couple of weeks. I mean, it's definitely not too late, but I'm really missing that motivation right now.
I'm working on my YA WWI WiP. It kind of has an OUTLANDER vibe (it starts in the present and has a huge chunk in the past) and maybe a tiny bit of a REVOLUTION vibe (in my wildest dreams, anyway). I'm really enjoying this one, so that certainly helps. I actually want to park my butt in that chair and write.
Hope you're having an awesome week! :D

  12. I have not read I'LL MEET YOU THERE yet but her YA contemporary about a teen living with a reality show family, SOMETHING REAL, was one of my favorite reads of 2014. I can't wait to read this one!

I'm glad to hear Writer Recharge has really helped you! I wasn't around social media much and missed on it so I'm not entirely sure what it is, but if it's helping you stick to your goals and get words down, that's really great! Wooo!

Hope you have a great week!

    1. I haven't read SOMETHING REAL, but I think I can picture it in my head if it's the one I'm thinking about. I'm really looking forward to IMYT. I've heard only great things. I'm so happy that Writer Recharge came along when it did. I've been struggling for so long now to get any writing done. Not sure what I'll do when WR is over, but I'll have to figure something out. Not too late to jump in on Writer Recharge. (sarabiren.com) Have an awesome week! :D

    1. There are things about the Bravermans that I like/envy, but there are things that drive me bananas--Zeek, the constant talking over each other thing, the mouthy/bratty/spoiled children. Eek! That said, I really want to see it through right until the end.

  15. I'm totally kicking myself because I think I donated BURN FOR BURN during our huge book purge. I liked it well enough, but wasn't sure if I'd continue with the series and now I'm thinking maybe I should. Bah. I'm enjoying RUBY RED so far and wish I had lots more time so I could kick back and read a nice big chunk at one time. The red velvet cake tea you gave me goes perfectly with it.

You did awesome on your writing goal this week! I wish really badly that I could set better goals right now so we could ride the wave of motivation together. I've been making slow progress in my nightly writing sessions, but it's been tough. Hope you have another successful week! I can't wait to read all these new words on your WIP!

I want to snatch those butter tarts off the screen and scarf them down. It's been ages since I had butter tarts, which is probably a good thing since I love them so much. I'll just have to live vicariously through your taste buds, I guess. :)

    1. I really enjoyed the BURN FOR BURN series with the exception of the piece of turd epilogue. (Which I was totally warned about.) I like books/series that keep me turning pages to find out how it's all going to come together. This was one of those series, for sure. The RUBY RED books are lots of fun. You know they're translated from German, right? I think they did a pretty good job, all things considered. Gideon's kinda hot too. ;-) I'm currently drinking red velvet cake tea!

I'm so happy that I'm finally writing again. Honestly, the best thing I did was set a higher word count goal for the week these past few weeks. I think it's the best possible way to get myself back into a writing routine because no way am I going to write 6000 words in one sitting. I mean, maybe I could, but I seriously doubt it. I'm not sure why I didn't think of that sooner. Not sure what I'm going to do once WR is done, though. Doing that check-in each week is really keeping me accountable. I suppose that's the point of WUW too, but there hasn't been as much goal-setting going on. Hope you're able to squeeze in more writing soon. Maybe as things start to move off your plate you'll have more time and brain space for writing. I sure hope so, anyway. It would be great to keep each other motivated and accountable.

Confession: the butter tarts weren't as good as they could have been. I didn't have raisins, so I put pecans in them. And I was lazy and used store bought tart shells which ended up baking kind of weird. Ah well. Next time I'll do the real deal from start to finish. Man, do I love butter tarts. Way too much, though. LOL (You can probably hear the sound of my rear end expanding all the way from Saskatchewan. :P)

  16. I am still so impressed with your wordcount! Don't hesitate to send anything my way if you feel like it! <3 And I've read your review on Goodreads, I am so curious about those books. Maybe I'll see if they have it at the library.

    1. Thanks, Elodie! I'm so happy that I'm *finally* writing again. This has been a long time coming. Maybe it's this story in particular, maybe it's Writer Recharge, or some combo of both. I'm not sure, but it seems to be clicking. Hope it continues this way! The story is all over the place right now (I write out of order), but once it's in better order, I'll send it your way. :D You should definitely read the BURN FOR BURN books (so good!) but skip the epilogue. No, really. Tracey and Katy will back me on this. ;-)

  17. Congrats on meeting your writing goals! Awesome! I've tried watching Parenthood but I just can't get into it maybe I'll try again since the series is done and I won't have to wait for a new season to start. I can't wait to read I'll Meet You There. I really liked her last book, Something Real.
