Writer Recharge 2015: Goal-Setting

It's February, and I've already started 2015 off on the wrong foot by not writing nearly enough and making tons of excuses!
It's February, and it's too darn early in the year to be this unproductive, this unmotivated, and this uninspired!
It’s February, which means it’s time for Writer Recharge!

Well, thank goodness for that.

Once again hosted by Sara BirenKaty Upperman, Alison Miller, LizParker, and Elodie Nowodazkij, "Writer Recharge is your chance for a four-week jump start in the middle of a cold, dreary winter. Set goals for yourself, check in once a week, and connect with other recharging writers. This year, we’ve come up with a few categories you might want to consider when making your goals. You can choose a goal (or goals) for one or some or all." (For more details about these goals and other Writer Recharge details, visit any of the host blogs.)

The ladies have provided us with SIX categories and my plan is to set one goal under each. Because I'm quite clearly crazy:

WRITE/REWRITE
I've been struggling to make any kind of progress on my current WiP, EVERY SAD & LOVELY THING, so I would really like to have anywhere from 1/3 to 1/2 of it drafted by the end of February. It will be tough, but I need to start pushing myself.

  • February 2nd - 8th → Write 5000 words (starting off a bit smaller, hoping to increase word count each week)

READ/REREAD
My TBR shelf is sagging with need-to-read books, but since I've heard so many good things about Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian's BURN FOR BURN trilogy, I'm going to try to read all of them this month. I have the first two already and the third is on its way.

STRETCH
I spend far too much time in front of the TV every evening but this month I would like to spend two nights a week doing something other than watching TV. I've listed reading and writing goals already, so it makes sense to use that time to do both of these things.

SELF
Diet: Eat fruits and veggies at least once per day. (I'm embarrassed that I need to set this goal, but there it is.)
Exercise: WEEK ONE exercise 1x, WEEK TWO exercise 2x, WEEK THREE exercise 3x, WEEK FOUR exercise 4x (form a habit)

CONNECT
On the nights when the TV is turned off, I'm going to make an effort to take part in writing sprints with writers online.

FUN
I'm not sure if this 100% qualifies as fun, but I'd like to a) knit some literary-themed accessories so I can b) finally get my Etsy Shop (Lit & Purl) up and running by the end of the month (while it's still chilly and there's still snow on the ground).

I'm so looking forward to this extra push to get some serious writing done this month! You should think about joining us!

  1. I can't wait to see the goods in your Etsy shop! I suspect I'll be a frequent shopper. Also, the name is too cute :-) I cannot wait to hear what you think of the BURN FOR BURN trilogy! So glad you're joining us this month, Jaime. Best of luck with all your goals!

    1. I really need to buckle down and start knitting stuff to put in this shop. :-) I keep starting things then stopping when I'm not satisfied with them. *sigh* I'm really eager to get going on BURN FOR BURN. I'm hoping tonight or tomorrow! Thanks again for co-hosting Writer Recharge again. It's exactly what I need to kick my butt in gear right now. :D

  2. I am ridiculously horrible about being consistent with fruits and veggies so no need to be embarrassed! And your goals are great and totally doable! We got this! So glad you can join us!

    1. The produce is not great in the winter where I live, so it's not something I really want to eat. Plus, I tend to eat a lot of comfort food when it's chilly like this. Lately, I've been craving fruits and veggies, so that should help me meet my goal. :-) Looking forward to doing this with you ladies! :D

    1. Me too, Liz! It seems to be helping already, so I'm happy. Plus, it's just nice to immerse myself in the writing community again. I feel like I've been a bit of a slacker on that front in recent months. Here's to a great month of progress! :D

  5. You know how excited I am about your Esty shop! :) And I am trying to make a more conscious effort to eat fruits and veggies, so I'm with you on that one :) Cheering you on, Jaime!

  6. It's great that your easing yourself into building habits with your writing and exercise. I'm doing the same! And the Etsy shop sounds cool! I would love to learn how to knit, but since you're already doing it... It's really too bad that winter can make it so hard for fresh produce (I don't have that problem much in San Diego now). I'm trying to learn what vegetables are best in each season, so maybe that will help? I'm vegan so I eat plenty, haha! Good luck!

  8. Hey Jaime, you can do the veggie thing. I eat veggies every day. I just buy the Pictsweet Tuscan Vegetables in the frozen food aisle. It is healthy to the max and I have one a day with Greek Yogurt. It's a great way to get your veggies! Have a great week!

  9. Great goals! And don't feel bad about the fruits/veggies one - I love veggies, but not such a fan of fruit. I'm like a child, having to trick myself into eating it.

I'm excited about your Etsy shop - can't wait to see all the awesome stuff you make :)

  10. Such great goals, Jamie! Good luck getting new words down this month. And those books on your TBR list sound like so much fun. And if you get that Etsy store up and running, let me know because it sounds delightful and I will want to buy things. :)

  12. If it makes you feel any better, your fruits & veggies goal is the same goal I had to set for myself at the beginning of this year. Soooo there's that.
