What's Up Wednesday

What's Up Wednesday is a blog hop created by me and my sister, Erin Funk, to help writers connect. With that aim in mind, we would like to encourage participants to swing by other WUW blog posts, get to know other writers taking part, and spread some writerly encouragement around. Before you go, make sure to leave a link to your post in the widget at the end of this post. Also, please remember to link back to the host blogs and/or use one of the fancy schmancy WUW buttons provided. We'd really appreciate it! For those of you who are new to WUW, these are the headings we have been using:

WHAT I'M READING
WHAT I'M WRITING (+ WRITING GOAL)

WHAT I'M READING
(Book titles are linked to Goodreads)
I finally read BLUE LILY, LILY BLUE, the third book in Maggie Stiefvater's Raven Cycle, mainly because I was tired of dodging spoilers. I know this isn't a popular opinion, but I have to say this was my least favourite of the series thus far. Even while I was savouring bits of prose, I found myself wishing this book was more focused, less rambling. There were moments when I honestly had no idea what was going on. All that aside, I am eager to see how she wraps up this series in THE RAVEN KING. Now, I'm rereading Kerstin Gier's SAPPHIRE BLUE and starting Marie Rutkoski's super awesome THE WINNER'S CRIME (!!!)

WHAT I'M WRITING
Since I checked in on Monday for Writer Recharge, I've been struggling to motivate myself to write. Ugh. I sort of suspected this might happen, but it's still a bit of a bummer. My plan is to jump back in today so I don't lose all of the momentum I gained in February. It was a very productive month. I managed to reestablish a writing routine and I wrote 25K new words!
Writing goal for the week → I would like to add 5000+ new words to my WiP.

WHAT WORKS FOR ME
Tyler Knott Gregson poetry
I would like to work on prettying up my WiP's prose, so I'm totally inspired by poets like Tyler Knott Gregson who write such evocative phrases, particularly about love and romance. So, so beautiful! Check out his Tumblr page → tylerknott.com

WHAT ELSE IS NEW
• I'm finally caught up on The 100 and don't want the season to end!
• I'm knitting a Harry Potter inspired shrug in Ravenclaw colours.
• I got another shiny cover for my planner, washi and stickers too.
• My Ladurée macarons recipe book came and it is so gorgeous. ♥
• I reviewed Elizabeth Briggs' book MORE THAN COMICS here.
• I also reviewed Dahlia Adler's book BEHIND THE SCENES here.

That's my week in a nutshell.
WHAT'S NEW WITH YOU?

  1. That recipe book is GORGEOUS!!

I'm reading THE WINNER'S CRIME as well! Would love to know what you think when you've finished!

    1. Isn't it beautiful? Even if I never attempted a recipe from it, I'd still just flip through it and admire the photos. (I do plan on baking macarons, though.) Can't wait to dive into THE WINNER'S CRIME. I've only cracked it open to admire the end pages and all of the other gorgeousness inside so far. Starting today, though! Have a great week, Sarah!

  2. Cute notebook!

Good luck with your goal for the week. You can do it. Don't give up :D

I know *exactly* what you mean about Blue Lily, Lily Blue. I feel that the second and third books lacked the focus that made the first so good. I hope the fourth has a tighter plot.

    1. I've got about 1200-1300 words under my belt today, so I'm happy about that. (Stars in my planner! Wooo!) I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt that way about BL,LB. I wanted to love it, because I loved the other two, but this one was a real slogfest for me. Crossing my fingers THE RAVEN KING is a satisfying conclusion. Have a great week, Cole! :D

  3. I've heard quite a few fans of The Raven Cycle say they didn't enjoy Blue Lily, Lily Blue as much as the other books. If it makes you feel any better I haven't even read The Raven Boys yet! ;)

25,000 words in February is amazing! Well done! I hope you manage to find the motivation you need. :)

*high fives* Woohoo, Ravenclaw House pride!

    Have a great week!

    1. All of the people I follow on Goodreads who have read and rated it gave it rave reviews, so I felt like the only oddball who didn't love it. I loved Book 1 and 2, so this was really disappointing for me. I'm really hoping Book 4 is the best possible conclusion to the series. My hopes and expectations are high. So far today, I've managed to write about 1200+ words, so I'm pretty happy about that. Here's hoping the words keep flowing, right? Have a great week, Jess!
      P. S. Ravenclaw 4-Ever! :D

  4. I listen to The Raven Boys, but wasn't too excited by it...maybe I missed something in not reading it instead? There are definitely a lot of fans of this series!

It's so frustrating when you've been really productive writing-wise, and then suddenly lose the drive. Hopefully you can meet your goal, and keep the awesome word count going!

    1. I loved THE RAVEN BOYS and THE DREAM THIEVES. The prose is spectacular in both of them. I just wish I'd loved Book 3 more than I did. :-/ I really hope the conclusion is everything I'm hoping it will be. I'm feeling a bit better about my productivity this week. So far today, I've managed to write 1200+ words, so that's a nice little chunk toward my goal for the week. Word sprints are definitely helping! Hope you have an awesome week, Mere! :D

  5. Your new planner cover is so pretty! I got mine yesterday (I went with the mermaid!) and I've decided there are few things better than Erin Condren packages. Definitely jump back into writing today, lady. I'll be editing, so ping me if you want an accounta-buddy. I could definitely use one. :-) Have an awesome week, Jaime!

    1. I figured I might like to swap it out with my plaid one. :-) And I'll be able to use them on the planner I buy next year, right? Geez. Pretty soon my planner is going to have a bigger wardrobe than I do. Erin Condren packages are the absolute best. So much fun! Thanks for prompting me to get writing this morning. Greatly appreciated, Katy! Hope you have a wonderful week! :D

  6. Your photos are always so lovely! Glad you're rereading the RUBY RED trilogy, too. Those books make me so happy. I'm sorry you didn't care for BLLB. I'd have to say it's my favorite of the three (but I'm open to letting the fourth book take that spot). What can I say? I love that paragraph about the yogurt. I will never stop talking about that paragraph.

I know what you mean about the momentum after Recharge - right there with you. Between sickness and having an edit due this morning, I slowed way down. Let's help each other get back on track! :) Enjoy the rest of your week!

    1. Thanks, Sara! It helps when the subject in the photo is lovely. That macarons recipe book...love it! Loving SAPPHIRE BLUE all over again. And I'm looking forward to more and more Gideon. Obviously. I so badly wanted to love BL,LB. Book 1 and 2 were favourites, but this one just didn't do much for me. It felt like it was all over the place and I'm still confused about certain things. Crossing my fingers that THE RAVEN KING is everything and more!

So far today I've managed to write 1200+ words thanks to word sprints, so I'm feeling a bit relieved about that. If you're writing later, ping me and I'll maybe join you. Have a great week, Sara! :D

  7. Love the planner. With all this planner talk I feel like I NEED to get one… I do have some school-y news on the blog today so maybe i will pick one up as a present :-) I got really bored with DREAM THIEVES (unpopular opinion or what) and quit halfway through. I decided I am going to wait until all of the books are out and then read them back to back. I wish I was more invested in the series…*sigh*

    1. The planner is so, so helpful to my productivity. I've been using a planner for a while now, but this one is just so much prettier, so I'm constantly flipping through it and checking it out. I guess that's the point, right? I think you should treat yourself to one, especially after that awesome grad school news! (Go you!) So far in the Raven Cycle, my favourite is still Book 1. I feel as though the middle books are a bit muddled and unfocused. I'm really, really hoping for a strong conclusion. I would definitely recommend reading them back to back. That might help you become more invested in the series??? Hope you have an (even more) awesome week, Rachel! :D

  8. You definitely don't want to let that momentum drop away when you did so great in February! I'm definitely going to check out that poetry- I finished my WIP but I feel like I never quite got the voice, so any kind of inspiration will be helpful.
BLLB was my least favorite of the three as well- I totally agree with you. It won't stop me from reading the last one though.
I can't wait to read The Winner's Crime!

    1. Well, I've managed to write 1200+ words so far today, so that's a huge relief! Looks like my 5000 word goal for the week might be attainable after all. :-) I think I'm just going to check out more poetry in general. My WiP feels a bit bland prose-wise, so I think that might be the inspiration I need. So far my favourite Raven Cycle book is still the first one. I liked Book 2, but Book 3 felt muddled and all over the place to me. Fingers crossed Book 4 is everything and more! Have a great week, Melanie! :D

    1. Thanks, Niki! I was pretty close to the start of this project, so I'm actually somewhere between 1/3 to 1/2 of the way through. Man, would I love to see THE END sometime in the very near future. Have a wonderful week! :D

  10. I love reading poetry to get inspired for writing. The rhythm usually motivates me to get writing. I'm a long time Whitman fangirl.

    1. I had never really thought about reading poetry for inspiration before, but now I'm sold. Going to be digging out my anthologies from university right away here. :-) I think it will really help my prose, which it really kind of needs. I'll have to check out some Whitman. Have a great week, Faith! :D

  11. I kind of felt the same about BLLB - I wasn't sure if it was because I was in a reading slump when I read it!

I've recently started watching The 100, because everyone keeps raving about it. Enjoying it so far!

Hope you can keep the writing up! :)

    1. There are a few of us here with the same opinion of BL,LB which makes me feel much better. For a while there, I was feeling like an oddball or something. To date, my favourite is still THE RAVEN BOYS. I'm really, really hoping for a strong finish with Book 4. Fingers crossed, right? I'm really enjoying The 100, though it has been super hard to avoid spoilers on social media. People are the actual worst for that kind of thing. Wishing you all the spoiler-dodging luck! And a great week! :D

  13. I'm so tempted by those pretty planners so many of you seem to be using, but I know I am terrible at actually using planners. :P But yay that you got more shinies to use with it! That and your macaron book make the end of your post so pretty!

Good luck with getting back into writing. I *NEED* to do that. I also agree that Knott's poetry is just lovely - simple and evocative. *sigh*

    1. Using this planner has really increased my productivity, so I'm calling that a win! Who knows? Maybe it would have that affect on you, too! Can't wait to try making macarons from this recipe book. I'll probably botch them, but it'll be fun trying, right? I'm such a TKG fangirl now. Seriously. Love his stuff so much. ♥

  14. Ah, between you and Katy I'm going to have to buy a planner even though I'm terrible about using those or journals. And congrats on all of the words you wrote in February. You're on fire! If you ever need a writing buddy for accountability, tweet me! I work in the evenings/night. :)

    1. I'm usually pretty decent at using a planner regularly, but since I got the Erin Condren planner, I'm using it all the time. My productivity has gone way up as well. Of course, that could be timing and making other changes in my life, but we'll just say it's the magic planner. ;-) If I'm ever writing in the evening, we'll have to write together! I'm always up for a writing buddy. :-)

  18. Sounds like you had a great February - 25k! Woohoo! I hope you can keep that momentum going. I can relate to what your feelings about BLUE LILY, LILY BLUE. I still love Maggie Stiefvater but, yes, there were moments of that book where I went, "wait, what just happened?" I, too, am anxiously awaiting the final book! Have a fantastic week. :)

    1. February was fantastic! Now to make sure I don't drop the ball in March... I managed to write 1300 words today, so that's not too shabby. :-) I think a lot of my confusion in BLLB had to do with Ronan and his dreams and then that whole Gwenllian thing. So weird. But, yes, I am still eager to see how this all wraps up nonetheless. Hope you have a great week, Kitty! :D

  19. I'm hoping to start SAPPHIRE BLUE this weekend. It took a lot of effort to hold off on reading it last month when I finished RUBY RED - what a surprise ending!

The macarons book is so pretty! And, once again, I hear a mention of food and my brain thinks I NEED THIS NOW!

    Have a great week :)

  21. Holy crap Jaime I LOVE your new header!! Poppies...so a propos. (And totally "you by the way) :)

Also, the cookbook and planner are lovely in a "I want to pet them" sort of way. (not at all creepily though)

Getting motivated to tackle your WiP is tough some times. I've been going through a "stuck" period and because I wasn't sure what exactly to do, it made it tricky to stay motivated. But 25K in a month is fantastic! You should feel proud. And reward yourself with lots of happy little stickers. :)

I'm sending tons of sunshine your way. I'm a firm believer that sunshine helps...with everything. Have a great week!

  22. I'm trying to convince myself to stick with my planner I bought at Target, but it's hard after seeing everyone else's pretty new planners! If they have any that start in August or September, though (aka the start of the school year), maybe for next year...

Good luck finding your motivation again this week!

  23. Cheering you on, Jaime! You can keep that momentum, I know it! That macarons recipe book does look yummy! And love your new stickers :) I've been taking forever to just read one book, I hope to get back in the groove of it very soon <3
